It was in Rocky Mount, North Carolina that the first firearms were used in a fight. On October 6th, 1892, two men met at a fair and began to argue about who should get the right to shoot at targets. The men got into a physical altercation and one man pulled out his gun and shot at the other. This event is known as the “Firing Line Argument” and it is thought to be the first time firearms were used in an altercation. In 1903, Rocky Mount became the site of America’s first rifle range. This range was designed to teach children how to use rifles and pistols. Gun target shooting continued to be popular in Rocky Mount until World War II when guns were banned. For many years after World War II, gun target shooting was limited to members of NRA (National Rifle Association) clubs only. In 1976, NRA decided that they wanted their own range back in Rocky Mount so they started construction on what would become today’s NRA Range Complex. The complex includes over 50 acres of land with 12 ranges including three rifle ranges, five pistol ranges, four shotgun ranges, and an airsoft game area. Today there are over 1,500 members from around the world who participate in NRA target shootings each year!

Rocky Mount is a town in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on Southeastern Shore Drive, about 25 miles (40 km) north-northwest of Charlotte. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,837. The name Rocky Mount is derived from the mountain range to its east and south. The first white European settlers in what is now Rocky Mount were prospectors led by Captain John Sevier in 1827-28. They named their new settlement Rocky Mount after a peak in that range—Mount Mitchell—although they had no idea where it was located. A post office was established at Rocky Mount in 1830, and remained open until 1907. In 1838, pioneer James Harnett settled nearby White Oak Swamp and named his new community Greenville because of the trees thereabouts. In 1840, Richard Henderson bought land at present-day Southeastern Shore Drive and built a house thereon called Henderson's Grove; he also began naming hills around the town after people or places who had contributed financially or materially to its development: First Hill (named for General James Broughton), Second Hill (for Colonel James Peebles), Third Hill (for Drury Lane Theatre founder Richard D’Arcy McGee), Fourth Hill (for Planter Jno.[sic] Eastman), Fifth Hill (after General Andrew Johnson's Creek Valley Campaign), SixthHill (after Confederate general Stonewall Jackson), SeventhHill(after one of Henderson's slaves). According to local legend, when stores started opening up along Shoals Road in 1853–54—the first commercial area outside of Charlotte—a group of men stopped by Henderson's Grove for dinner one night and announced their intention to establish a town thereabouts. The men then took rockips from nearby Hickory Bottom plantations near Chapel Hill and began planting them around what would eventually become Rocky Mount; within two years most of what remain today were in place. The first settler school was built on First Congregational Church property northwest of present day Main Street/Route 27 just west of where today Park Boulevard meets US 19/NC 10 near milepost 5½ on July 22nd 1889 by Mrs[?]. L[aurence] W[illiams] K[ermit], an early teacher with several pupils including my two youngest siblings under 7 years old during that time! We all helped build it!

The popularity of target shooting has also led to other derivatives such as airsoft firearms and paintball pistols which use small plastic pellets instead of live ammunition
The first gun target was designed in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte, a French military engineer. It consisted of a large, round metal drum that could be hit with a musket ball. The targets were used to test new weapons and ammunition. In 1812, the British War Office developed a target called "Bull's Eye." It consisted of an elliptical metal disk that could be hit with a ball. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell built an artillery emplacement at Second Manassas using ironclad warships as targets. The ironclad USS "Virginia" was used as the target ship while Confederate artillery fired rounds into her hull.
Rocky Mount is a small town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, located on the Yadkin River. The population was 2,052 at the 2010 census. Rocky Mount is part of the Greensboro-Winston-Salem Combined Statistical Area. The town was founded by Welsh immigrants in 1887 as a stopover on their way to Williamsburg, Virginia. The first store was built on Main Street and operated for several years before being bought by John Pritchard and his family. In 1927, Pritchard donated land to build a school which would serve the community until 1954 when it became private property and the school closed. In 1957, after World War II ended, Rocky Mount voted to become an independent city and has since been governed by its own mayor/council system with a unicameral city council. The current mayor is William Easley Jr.. Rocky Mount is home to two high schools: Rocky Mount High School and Highland Springs High School. It also has one elementary school: RockyMount Elementary School. There are also several businesses in town including farms (including White Horse Farms), restaurants (including Joe's Pizza), and convenience stores (including Target).
Rocky Mount was founded by James Robertson in 1827. The town was named for Rocky Mount, a mountain near Charlottesville, Virginia. In 1848, Rocky Mount became the county seat of McDowell County.
