Rocky Mount is a town located in Spartanburg County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,841 at the 2010 census. Rocky Mount is the county seat of Spartanburg County. The town was founded in 1854 by Scotch-Irish settlers from Scotland and Ireland who had fled to North Carolina after being driven out of their home country during the Potato Famine. Rocky Mount is named for Confederate general and then Ulysses S. Grant's friend General James Elam RockyMount (1809-1881). The first post office was established in Rocky Mount on March 2, 1854. Rocky Mount became an incorporated municipality on February 17, 1907. The original boundaries of the town were: east side of Black Warrior River south to US Highway 15; north side of Black Warrior River east to US Highway 21; and west side of Black Warrior River north to US Highway 25A. On July 1, 1980, the eastern border between Rocky Mount and Greenville Township was changed to its present location as a result of a landowner sale which included 6 acres (2 hectares) east of US Highway 421 which served as the Town Square/Zoo Area until that date when it became part of newly acquired acreage adjacent to Interstate 85 near milepost 234 in Greenville Township

In 1865, when Confederate forces unsuccessfully tried to destroy Fort Donelson at Knoxville, Tennessee; Rockymount helped to protect nearby stores from destruction while also providing cover for Union troops under Lieutenant Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest during their attempt to storm the fortifications. Since then, Rockymount has become something of an historical footnote within North Carolina – but it still retains some of its proud traditions such as its annual mountain biking festival which attracts thousands of visitors each year!
