Rocky Mount is located in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, and has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years. The first European to visit Rocky Mount was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He discovered the area while exploring the southeastern United States. Rifleman Nathaniel Philbrick fired two rounds from his Manton rifles through a rifle sling over 100 feet onto a neighboring farmhouse roof; he then reloaded and continued shooting until he downed four deer with one shot (the first such verified pistol kill with a rifle). Rifleman George Armstrong Custer killed six Sioux warriors with one round from his Sharps action rifle on November 27th of that year at Little Bighorn Canyon National Monument (now part of Yellowstone National Park) despite suffering massive head wounds which caused him to lose consciousness after just three shots from his .30-06 Winchester Springfield rifle

Rocky Mount is a town in McDowell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area. Rocky Mount is located on the Hiwassee River and has a small shopping center, a post office, two churches, and one school. The first inhabitants of this region were the Cherokee Indians who lived along the Hiwassee River before European arrival. In 1794, General George Rogers Clark discovered this area while exploring the interior of North Carolina for the British army during his expedition to gain control over South Carolina. He named it Rocky Mount after Mount Mansfield in England. The townsite was laid out by Judge James Aiken in 1800 as a military post on what is now known as Montgomery Street between Second and Third Streets east of Interstate 85. In 1827, General William Troup founded Fort Troup on land grant from President James Kenedy. This fort served as an outpost for several months until November 29 when it was destroyed by Creek Indians under American command at Battle of Horseshoe Bend near present-day Rockingham County line. Fort Troup reverted to Indian hands shortly thereafter and never regained its prior strategic importance within McDowell County until 1841 when Confederate forces burned it down during their campaign against Union forces under Ulysses S Grant at Chickamauga Ridge near present-day Winston-Salem County line. Later that year, Rocky Mount became home to Confederate general Jubal Early's Headquarters Camp during his raid into Union territory through McDowell County in late October 1864 prior to attacks against Chattanooga and other locations throughout Georgia that month resulting in significant losses for Early's forces including 5 dead and 25 wounded soldiers atmilepost 10 miles (16 km) southeast of RockyMount village site). A post office called Rocky Mount was established in 1892; however operations were transferred to Julianna from 1895 until 1898 due to high demand from residents for postal service outside of town limits caused by mineral discoveries within walking distance of both posts.]] On January 1 1907 all mail services were discontinued with no explanation given other than "the great depression" which had hit America just days earlier that year].] In 1916 construction began on what would become Trinity Episcopal Church which opened its doors less than two years later on December 4th ]] On July 15th 1935 local officials organized a citizens' committee formed to initiate plans for annexation by neighboring Charlotte whereupon applications were filed September 7th ].
