A post office was established here in 1821, and by 1838, residents had developed a small store and two blacksmith shops to support themselves. In 1847, a school was built and named for Presbyterian minister Rev. John Sargent; it continued to be used until 1953. By 1860, as coal mining became more popular in Swain County, miners began arriving from other parts of North Carolina to work here; within 10 years, the population had grown to over 200 people.
