Rocky Mount, North Carolina is a town in neck of the woods, located just south of Gaston County in central NC. The population was 3,859 at the 2010 census and 4,521 at the 2013 estimate. Rocky Mount is part of the Gastonia- Charlotte metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now RockyMount were traders from Virginia in 1765. The town was platted in 1812 by General James Soddy as an overland trading post on the main route from Raleigh to Charlotte. On December 12th, 1836, Mr. John Hance founded an academy for boys here which survives as Hance Academy today. In 1861 Confederate General Robert Ewell more than doubling his forces marching through Central NC made their way down I-95 to Greensboro and then on northward into Gaston County where they entrenched themselves around Rocky Mount and began shelling it daily with heavy artillery while stores were being looted and people killed inside Fort Donelson outside of town – effectively besieging it until finally withdrawing eastward several days later without taking any prisoners or destroying any property inside town . The Battle of Rocky Mount took place February 11-12 1862 when Union Brigadier General John McClernand attacked Confederate forces under Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Jearns near present day intersection of US 75 & Jordan Avenue SW about 10 miles northeast of Rocky Mount McClernand’s force numbered 7 companies (Alectoians 9th NY), commanded by lieutenant colonel Edward Gray with two field officers: Samuel Gist (Genessee) and Israel Putnam (Connecticut). With no cavalry available other than a detachment led by Captain James Bogue who advanced upriver towards rocky mount he ordered his men not to fire which resulted in some losses for both sides but also preserved the position for McClernand’s force when they withdrew upstream that night under cover of darkness after achieving their objective; capturing 1/4 mile square within 5 minutes total effective firepower against only 8 men outnumbered 16 rifles! That same evening another attack was made against Confederate positions close to modern day Maryville but this time without success despite heavily fought engagements lasting 6 hours with casualties on both sides including many horses! One accounts has Pte Bogue managing to crawl undetected back into Jackson Hole Cemetery before dark so may have been successful but most likely failed due lack Of unsupported infantry close enough for engaging large enemy force
