In the 1800s, Rocky Mount was a small community located in eastern North Carolina. The town was founded by English settlers in 1795. At the time, Rocky Mount had a population of only around 100 people. However, over time, the town grew and became an important center for trade and commerce in the region. In 1807, Rocky Mount was chosen as the site for a military post known as Fort Johnston. The fort served as a strategic stronghold during the American Revolution and later played an important role in suppressing secessionist sentiment within North Carolina. By 1860, however, Fort Johnston had fallen into disrepair and its garrison had been reduced to just 10 soldiers. This left Rocky Mount vulnerable to attack from Confederate sympathizers who saw it as another way to create an outpost on their behalf inside of North Carolina. On July 12th of that year, Confederate forces attacked Fort Johnston with significant losses inflicted upon them but were ultimately successful in driving off the attackers. This event marked the beginning of an era of increased Confederate activity throughout eastern North Carolina which would continue until 1865 when Union troops finally took over control of the area following their victory at Gettysburg. Since Fort Johnston's fall, much attention has been given to its former occupants—the original 10 British colonists who lived there for more than two centuries! Today, you can visit some of these descendants living nearby and learn about their history and experiences during this pivotal period in our country's history. For example, one recent descendant is Driscoll Waddell who lives on nearby Pike Street and tells stories about growing up close to Ft Johnston both before and after it fell into ruin; or John Frayne who spent his formative years attending school at Ft Johnston before moving away soon after Umstead's purchase; or even today’s resident Brian Brouncker: Jr., whose father replaced Frayne as director at Fort Johnston Museum back in 2007! All these individuals share one common goal: To preserve what remains of Ft Johnsonston’s legacy so that future generations may enjoy discovering all that it once held!

A range of mountain peaks runs northeast to southwest across much of the town; they are mostly 1,500 feet or less above sea level and make up much of the eastern edge of RockyMount: Cohoes Peak to the east, Greenmount Mountain to the northwest and Blue Ridge Mountains to the southeast. Upscale home builders have taken up residence near downtown Raleigh since 2007 as Raleigh's housing market roared back after years with little growth or inflation hiatus during recessionary times
