The first permanent settler in what would become Rocky Mount was John Wesley Hardee, who arrived in 1799. Hardee founded the town on his farmstead near present-day Rocky Mount when he discovered fertile land next to the Catawba River. The area that would become Rocky Mount was originally known as Johnson's Ford because General James Johnson explored it in 1794 while campaigning against Native Americans led by chief Weequahicetes. In 1814, Hardee's son-in-law Elijah Hicks purchased from Colonel Alexander McMillan 200 acres (81 hectares) of rolling hills and began farming here. By 1825, Hicks had developed Hickory Grove into one of the most extensive agriculture operations in McDowell County. Rocky Mount experienced some early growth due to its location on Highway 31 between Hendersonville and Waynesville which facilitated trade with other parts of eastern North Carolina and Georgia during this time period. In 1907, developers Isaac Cramer and Reuben Aiken constructed what became known as "The Ark" – an artificial lakefront fortress that spanned 3/4 mile (1 kilometer). This ambitious project ultimately failed but demonstrated how success could be achieved through concerted effort when private enterprise flourishes under conditions of trust and confidence within society at large
