Rocky Mount is a small town in Rowan County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Roanoke Rapids Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first guns used in Rocky Mount were muskets and pistols. A man by the name of Hargrave built a cannon here in 1786. In 1827, General Robert Ewell founded Rocky Mount Academy to provide education for children of wealthy parents who could not send their children to school because of the expense. The Academy remained open until 1947 when it merged with Randolph-Macon College to form Appalachian State University. In 1971, Rocky Mount became an incorporated city and remains its own municipally run government today. In that year, it voted to become one of only two cities in North Carolina (the other being Wilmington) to accept concealed carry permits from handgun permit holders without having to undergo any additional training or background checks. Gun barrels were made here beginning in the early 1800s as firearms became more popular in America due to increased warfare and trade abroad. By 1853, gun barrels had reached their peak production with over 2 million barrels produced each year alone!
