In 1951, Rocky Mount was designated as one of thirteen towns in North Carolina that were established as part of the newly created Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC). As ARC's primary focus has been rural development within Appalachian regions such as those in North Carolina, Rocky Mount has been able to maintain its small-town feel while also playing an important role in ARC's operations. Today, Rocky Mount is known for its wide variety of businesses including restaurants and stores square off against each other along Main Street; handicraftsmiths can be found making candles or quilts from local materials atartisan shops; Andejo wines are available at several stores; and traditional Black Mountain music can be heard during live events at area venues like The Bald Eagle Tavern or Blue Ridge Amphitheater. As one of only four municipalities inARC that are still active after more than fifty years (), Rocky Mount remains a vibrant community with residents engaged in everything from day-to-day life to larger issues around regional economic development.

The current name originated from a speech given by then-Governor John Hunt Morgan at an event held to commemorate the centennial of Rocky Mount's founding in 1922. American Tobacco Company's factory, which is still extant, was built here in 1904 and played a significant role in ROCKY MOUNT'S CULTURAL ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE 20th CENTURY. The plant produced iconic products like Koolsarge and Newport cigarettes; it also manufactured rockets for NASA during the Apollo program and other scientific equipment. Today, American Tobacco Company's factory remains Operated by Pfeiffer & Sons Incorporated as one of America’s leading tobacco manufacturers with over $5 billion in sales last year alone
