Firearms in Rocky Mount, North Carolina date back to the late 1800s. The area was known for its large andProducer of firearms, Colt Firearms Manufacturing Company., which manufactured both handguns and rifles. In 1892, a group of Rocky Mount businessmen organized the Rocky Mount Rifle Club to promote rifle shooting in the town. In 1911, Samuel Colt founded the Colt firearms company in Hartford, Connecticut. The company made revolvers and pistols as well as shotguns and rifles. Colt began making hat designs for other businesses including his own clothing line and others. In 1912, he produced a hat called the "Yankee". The design featured a high-crowned brim with an American flag emblem on top. The hat was popular with soldiers and civilians alike and became one of Colt's most successful products. In 1922, John Moses Browning founded Browning Arms & Ammunition Corporation (BA&AC) in order to produce firearms that were more reliable than those produced by Colt. BA&AC would become world-renowned for their production of bolt action rifles such as the Remington 700 series and actions for shotguns such as the 12 gauge shotgun (which is still beingproduced today). Rocky Mount is a small town in North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of McDowell County. Rocky Mount is located in the Appalachian Mountains and straddles the border of Virginia to the south and West Virginia to the north. The community lies at an elevation of 4,007 feet (1,216 m). The first settler in what would become Rocky Mount was John White in 1785. He named his farm after Mount Rushmore National Monument in Arizona. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson fought a battle against Native Americans here while on campaign against Native American leaders led by Chief Joseph Arapaho. Today Rocky Mount marks one of three places where General Jackson's body has been found: along with Tupelo Hill and Fort Donelson on Tennessee's Cumberland River Valley floor,Jackson was buried here near present-day Bowie Lake before being moved to Memphis for burial elsewhere in 1827; and at nearby Mound City National Cemetery from 1865 until his death a few years later. In 1830, Doctor Benjamin Rush came to Rocky Mount for medical treatment following an illness he had contracted near Surry County in North Carolina then traveled downriver to Fayetteville where he died six weeks later from a severe case of pneumonia brought over by trader David Thompson on his trip from Canada through Kentucky across the Appalachians into Pennsylvania that winter In 1840 Drs Charles Goodall and James Cushing also came to Rockymount during their investigation into tuberculosis among white men working west of Raleigh/Durham TN By 1850 there were around 50 people living here including 20 farmers who raised pigs, hogs,and chickens By 1860 there were 350 residents with 120 farmers still farming operations around Rockymount Some other businesses that operated during this time include blacksmithing shop (1860), wagon wheel making service (1870), gristmill (1871), livery stable (1872-75), bakery (1877-79), photographer Samuel Denny's First African American Picturesque Photography Studio(1881) as well as post office which opened its doors on February 1st 1870 . Also during this time some churches started up such as Meeting House Presbyterian Church which services began services on October 15th 1870 when Rev Wm Hutchins officiated . Reverend Hutchins would be followed by Rev Jno Huggins who served until November 8th 1880 when he passed away suddenly leaving behind 2 daughters married to Daniel Denton orchard farmer Robert Epps each having their own home chapel built between them serving area for many years afterwards finally being SOLD TO THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA ON APRIL 3RD 1997 FOR $325 KITNAM IN CLOSE QUALITY REMAINING AS IS TODAY
