When General Robert Ewell led Confederate forces into North Carolina during the Battle of Charlotte on May 6, 1861 they encountered Union forces under General Thomas J. McClellan at Rocky Mount and were repulsed with heavy losses including almost every officer and enlisted man over age 21 except one Captured Private William Hays who managed to escape to Kinston before being recaptured by McClellan’s forces five days later; Hays became known as “the last good Confederate” after helping lead an abortive breakout from prison at Pee Dee Island off South Carolina’s coast on April 26th when all but two hundred men escaped unharmed although their supplies were lost overboard due to bad weather conditions; these events are commemorated annually by Stonewall Jackson Day parade through downtown Rocky Mount which takes place on Saturday mornings beginning late summer

Rocky Mount is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,439 at the 2010 census. Rocky Mount is part of the Gastonia, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known inhabitants of what is now Rocky Mount were two groups of Algonquian Indians who migrated from Ohio in the early 17th century. Their land lay on three sides of a small stream that ran through present-day Gaston County and extended into Bertie County to the east. In 1793, Colonel James Moore and his regiment of cavalry moved into what is now Rocky Mount from their encampment at Dinwiddie Court House south of Grahamstown. After skirmishing with Cherokee Indians near present-day Winchester, they burned their villages and looted many homes in what became known as "the Great burning." A post office was established at Rocky Mount in 1827, and remained in operation until it was closed by the US Postal Service in 1957. The first settler in what is now RockyMount was Elisha Dutton Sr., who purchased 640 acres (2 km²) along with others around present-day Gastonia from John Tryon for $1,000 on November 15, 1794. He named his farm "Dutton's Hill" after himself and his wife Elizabeth Dutton (1751–1814). The townsite plat for RockyMount was filed on October 1st 1800 by Joshua Sims & associates under patent number 7052 dated December 16th 1800 issued to Joshua Sims alias Woodbridge by Sir William Johnson Knight Commander of the Bathurstshire Regiment British Army during the American Revolutionary War – hereafter referred to as joshua sims patent #7052/1800 or simply joshuaSims Patent #7052. Rockymount would become an incorporated municipality on February 9th 1802 when it ratified its constitution which read: "Resolved by this body that we should hold ourselves together as one Body politic under one name." In May 1861 Confederate General Robert Easley appointed Major General Jno Pemberton commander of all Union forces within five miles radius thereof; this order caused some people within town limits to take up arms against their Gov’t accountable only to themselves instead of Uncle Sam! However most residents quickly came to terms with things after Pemberton’s death soon afterwards . By 1865 Confederate General A.-P Beaumont had positioned himself about 10 miles away from town limits so much so that he surrendered there rather than surrender anywhere else! But how could anyone living inside those 10 mile radius boundaries know anything about it? They could only listen to rumors passed down between friends or family members like everyone else did back then!

The town grew rapidly due to its rich coal and mineral resources, and by the turn of the century, Rocky Mount had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1907, Rocky Mount became a city, and in 1912 it amalgamated with nearby towns of White City and Eastover to form the new municipality of Rocky Mount/White City. The city continued to grow until World War II when it lost its status as a city and functioned as a small rural community. After the war, Rocky Mount reverted back to its original small-town form and experienced somedeclining fortunes during the postwar years. However, since the late 1990s there has been an increasing amount of development throughout downtown area including new restaurants, bars, and shops; this has helped rejuvenate downtown areas and help renaissance their fortunes.
