Roanoke Rapids is located in the state of North Carolina. The population was 5,711 at the 2000 census. The city is the county seat of McDowell County and it is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Roanoke Rapids is a small town with a population size of only around 10,000 people. It was founded in 1835 by General John Sevier and his wife Elizabeth, who were pioneers in what is now McDowell County. The Seviers had seven children and all but one of them died in infancy. One son, John Sevier II, became a general in the Confederate army during the American Civil War and he later returned to Roanoke Rapids to be mayor from 1865 to 1870. In 1905, Roanoke Rapids was acquired by Raleigh-Durham for $2 million dollars which made it one of its most valuable properties. During World War II, Roanoke Rapids served as an airfield for the United States Navy's aircraft squadron NAS Cherry Point which flew military planes from nearby Durham Airport. Today, Roanoke Rapids retains some vestiges of its pioneer days including such landmarks as The John Sevier House Museum which tells the story of General John Sevier's life and work; The Old Presbyterian Church which has been preserved as an example of early church architecture; and Pawpaw Park which contains a botanical garden and playgrounds for children. Despite this history however, much has changed since then within Roanoke Rapids itself including how its economy has shifted over time from agriculture to manufacturing (primarily textiles) while also experiencing gentrification throughout recent years giving rise to new businesses and residences close by that may provide insights into certain aspects about early American settlement patterns elsewhere on these same shores today).

In 1865, he married Anna Hargrave, who would later become one of the most important women voices in the region. The townsite that now sits at the heart of Roanoke Rapids was donated by Anna Hargrave to General James Robertson on December 4th, 1871. The General laid out the town on land that he had purchased from Andrew Johnson two years earlier. The town of Roanoke Rapids was established in 1819 as the first permanent settlement in what would become the United States. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Catawba River, and by 1830 it had a population of over 100 people. It lost its status as a small rural community after white settlers began to arrive in increasing numbers, but continued to thrive until the late 19th century when it experienced significant decline. In the early 20th century, Roanoke Rapids regained some of its former prominence thanks to its role as a center for agricultural production and its proximity to larger settlements. However, during World War II there was significant destruction and loss of life at Roanoke Rapids – most notably from bombing raids – which left it struggling economically thereafter. In recent decades, however, Roanoke Rapids has begun to experience resurgence with new development and investment coming both from within and outside of the community.
