Roanoke Rapids is the county seat of Nash County. The town was founded in 1881 by settlers from Virginia and named for Roanoke Island in Virginia. The first post office was established in 1888, and the town name was changed to Roanoke Rapids on December 8, 1914. The present-day village of Roanoke Rapids was incorporated as a city in 1959. On July 12, 1800, a group of 25 white men set out from Forney Ferryboat Landing on the South fork of the Yadkin River for what would become Roanoke Rapids. They marched through five days of severe weather before reaching their destination. After disembarking their boats at Grandin's Ferry Landing on the confluence of riversidas (two forks), they proceeded upriver to establish stores and build houses. By 1801, there were 100 residents living in Roanoke Rapids; by 1803 there were 300 residents. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson arrived at Fort Pulaski and began his march against Native Americans in North Carolina. On December 27th he reached Roanake Rapids after marching overland through rough country full of mountains and rapids. At this point navigation became difficult due to shoals and barbed wire fences along interior waterways created by Confederate forces during Sherman's campaign against Atlantaquit Savannah Georgia four years earlier

By the end of World War II, Roanoke Rapids had become one of the most advanced cities in North Carolina thanks to its innovative engineering and construction efforts.
