Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina is a town located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The population was 9,542 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Wake County. Roanoke Rapids is part of the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area and is home to Duke University, UNC Chapel Hill, NC State University and numerous other colleges and universities. It has a humid subtropical climate with mean monthly temperatures ranging from 26 °F (−3 °C) to 71 °F (22 °C). The first permanent European settler in what would become Roanoke Rapids was James Fenton in 1784. In 1819, John Capps founded a small community near modern-day Durham as an agricultural community for freed slaves who had left Pamlico Sound after being freed by General Robert Ewell during the American Revolution. In 1865, when Confederate General Robert Ewell attacked Fort Fisher on Easter Sunday, all but three hundred men of his division were killed or captured within minutes of their assault on this strategic fortification at Roanoke Rapids point on Cape Elizabeth Bay. For many years historians have debated whether or not Ewell's operation constituted a formal surrender rather than an unplanned withdrawal from battle following his successful seizure of Wilmington; however DNA testing now supports that assertion beyond any doubt. At least one historian has written that "the collapse [of Fort Fisher] marked one victory for Union forces over Confederate ones". A post office called Fenton was established in 1825, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. The townspeople petitioned for incorporation as Roanoke Rapids in 1903; this request was denied because Charlotte had already been incorporated as Wake County two years earlier. A new schoolhouse was built soon afterwards which became known as the "Queen's School" due to its high ranking among local schools even though it did not technically serve students from Roanoke Rapids itself; this building still stands today across from Interstate 85 just outside of town limits along Route 423 northbound (just east of milepost 437). In 1911–12 Baptist pastor Revs G W Smith and S J Bacon started construction on what would eventually become First Presbyterian Church which served both local residents and visitors alike until its demolition in 1974 due to structural problems unique to that era; only parts remain standing today including the original main altar/ pulpit combination dating back to 1922 while also preserving some internal features such as stained glass windows dating back to 1925 Additionally significant portions of Second Presbyterian Church also survive including both its bell tower which overlooks downtownRoanoke Rapids before terminating abruptly about 40 feet above ground level about halfway between Main Street & Trinity Avenue (& Old US 421 bridge across creek joining these 2 streets) There are plans underway by Town Councilors Jeffery Morrow & Donnie Walker - under Mayor Jimmie Rodgers - to restore & reopen both churches – likely starting next year – once all necessary funding has been raised! For many years people took great pride & pleasure w/ naming things after our fallen heroes – current Mayor Jimmie Rodgers names ROANOKE RAPIDS Elementary School “John Pemberton” HIGH SCHOOL “George Washington” etc….. We truly lost something special when those beautiful old buildings were torn down…. But we can get better again!
