Charleston businessman Julius Crosby donated land adjacent to his estate near present day Interstate 95 for a park that would eventually become known as Crosby Park. In 1907, James Manton founded J&J Manufacturing Company which manufactured everything from cigarettes to radios and TVs before merging with Radio Corporation America in 1987 In 1944 during World War II, USS "Portsmouth" left Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and steamed downriver to join HMS "Queen Elizabeth" at Yorktown Naval Base just off Virginia Beach; they were then escorted back upriver to their base at Portsmouth where they arrived safely on October 3rd 1st US Navy SquadronRON 806 Commander Admiral Louis Esterhaus awarded USS "Portsmouth"'s Aviation Wing Unit Citation “For conspicuous heroism” while attached USS "Yorktown". After much debate and discussion, it was decided that Roanoke Rapids would be given its own county with a total population of 20 miles² - more than any other town inNorth Carolina at that time! On February 1st (1846), Gov John Bledsoe issued an executive order creating North Carolina County courthouse square as our new county courthouse location! This event marks one of history's most significant milestones for our community!
