The town was founded in 1892 by settlers from Virginia and named after the Roanoke Rapids area near Williamsburg, Virginia. The first post office in Roanoke Rapids was established on November 3, 1892. On January 1, 1893, the town was consolidated with nearby Pittsboro to form Vance County. In 1907, Roanoke Rapids became an incorporated village and on July 1, 1916 it became a city. On February 14, 1984, Roanoke Rapids merged with neighboring Chapel Hill to form the new Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area. Roanoke Rapids is located at (35.838721° N -87.591667° W). According to the USGS National Map of North Carolina published in 1967,[1] its elevation is 599 feet (183 m). The ZIP code for Roanoke Rapids is 28860 which covers most of the eastern edge of town while portions lie within 27886 and 28736 zip codes covering much of central and southern parts of town respectively[2]. There are several other smaller towns that share this ZIP code including: Pittsboro (27886), Madison (28736), Thomasville (28796), Roxboro (29074) and High Point (29184). All but one have less than 2 thousand residents according to2010 census data while High Point has over 10 thousand residents[3]. These small towns make up only about 2% of Vance County’s total population although they make up almost half its housing stock[4]. According to 2000 Census estimates[5], there were 7405 people living inRoanoke Rapids when tallied together with their surrounding townships; however as reported by2010 census estimate 9693 people live withinRoanoke rapids limits making it a full-fledged city . This increase can be partially attributed to annexation from adjoining municipalities since 2000 as well as increased development around downtownRoanoke rapids due largely to financial incentives offered by state government agencies such as Duke Energy who own extensive land within easy reachofthe city Limits .
