Roanoke Rapids is a town in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the Yadkin River. The population was 7,617 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area. The town was founded by Scots colonists in 1755 as Fort Tryon and named for Prince Charles Edward Stuart, Duke of York and Albany, brother of King George II of Great Britain. In 1782, the British military burned down Fort Tryon to prevent its use by the French during their War for Independence; though no one was killed or injured in the fire, it destroyed many valuable possessions in what is now Roanoke Rapids. In 1814-1815 Governor Moore issued an order requiring all white males between 16 and 60 years old to leave North Carolina for three years if they resided within two miles (3 km) of any Indian village or post without first obtaining written consent from those villages' chiefs; this order caused great consternation among some English settlers who had recently arrived in what was then a frontier land filled with Native American nations. Many people complied with Governor Moore's order but others refused to leave because they felt that they were not being given fair consideration as citizens of North Carolina and that they had nothing to lose by staying while their brethren elsewhere were being removed en masse. In 1819-1820 260 English adventurers set out from Baltimore on horseback journey through central America looking for new lands to explore;some reached Roanoke Rapids before arriving there on February 14, 1821 Courtland Smith wrote: "We have passed over [the Yadkin] so low that we can see its water boiling like molten gold about 100 yards below us." The travelers did not find anything worth exploring here so returned home without reaching Roanoke Rapids; however local residents continue to think back to this event and plan accordingly for future trips when traveling through central America which would include crossing over the Yadkin River again soon! The first permanent settler in what is now today Roanoke Rapids was James Aiken who purchased 640 acres (252 hectares) northeast of present day town center from David Wilkinson in 1800s.; he named his purchase Parkesborough after James Paine, 3rd Baron Camden whose pamphlet An Inquiry into Public Justice helped spur revolutionary beliefs among some Englishmen living near where Portsmouth Naval Shipyard later stood - thereby helping inspire settler John Cockerill Jr., founder of nearby Kinston, NC., to name his community after Cockerill's political patroness! Cockerill built roads and churches hereabouts beginning around 1800 until 1830 when he sold most assets including Stroudsburg Presbyterian Church which still stands today across from Parkesborough Elementary School located just east off US Highway 460 just south/west of downtown Rossville! From 1830 thru 1840 much activity took place hereabouts centered around trading goods with various Native nations along both banks of river including Cherokee Indians along South bank & Creek Indians along East bank although early maps indicate primarily small boat traffic passing through rather than permanent settlements/roads/buildings being constructed! Eventually about 1850s large concentrations began happening around present day downtown Rossvillenorthwest corner lot #2 where previously only small boats docks were situated & several stores became prominent such as Fidelity Bank & Trust Company which still occupies that location today (& adjoining lots). From this time onward larger buildings began appearing frequently along main streets leading into downtown Rossville especially opposite court house Square immediately south side next door steps leading up onto square . . . All these changes resulted largely due to increased demand generated by railroad development which linked downtown Rossville directly with Raleigh (& other major cities) making transportation increasingly accessible !!
The Roanoke Rapids area formed around 12,000 years ago when the Cumberland Plateau was uplifted. The area became a part of the Southeast United States after the American Revolution in 1775. The region was named for Robert E. Lee, who fought in the war and died at Appomattox Court House. In 1868, white settlers began arriving in what is now Roanoke Rapids. By 1870, they had erected homes and started a small business district. They were joined by black people in 1872. The first store on Roanoke Rapids Boulevard opened on July 6, 1870, by Wm Blythe and his brother-in-law Joseph Berryhill. In 1893, Jno Hargrave built the first post office in Roanoke Rapids with five mail boxes. In 1898, Mrs. John Swayze started a grocery store on Main Street that became one of the most successful businesses in town until it closed its doors in 1984 due to economic recession conditions caused by inflationary pressures from neighboring cities' shopping malls nearby. In 1912, Lillie Mae Gilmore founded a school; it operated until 1964 when it was closed due to lack of enrollment opportunities due to changes within North Carolina's educational system since then as well as other factors such as suburbanization of various parts of Raleigh County (then Wake County). The Gilmore School building still stands today and is used as an event space by local nonprofit organizations such as feeding tables during Harvestfest events each year
