Roanoke Rapids is a town in McDowell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,869 as of the 2010 census. Roanoke Rapids borders the towns of Wise and Kinston to the north, Hickory to the east, and Burlington to the south. It includes parts of both Camp LeJeune and Fort Bragg military installations. The first Europeans to visit Roanoke Rapids were traders from England in 1609. They named it "Rhodes" after their countryman Rhodri Mawddryn who had earlier visited that area. The first permanent European settlement in what would become Roanoke Rapids was founded by Frenchmen in 1750 as Fort Caroline de la Résistance on land that had been granted by Governor James Moore to General John Forbes during the war for independence against Great Britain. For many years this was one of only two settlements in McDowell County with full political autonomy; other towns being Kinston and Wise at that time were part of more disorderly militia communities under British rule. In 1837–38 there was an outbreak of yellow fever which caused a large number of deaths in Roanoke Rapids; at its height there were over 100 confirmed cases and around 50% (35 out of 55) fatalities due to the virus. The fortuitous discovery in 1839 by Drs John Fenton and James Bogue while exploring a new route through central North Carolina for trade led to a rapid expansion within Roanoke Rapids; within ten years it had grown from just 10 residents to nearly 200 people with about 60 businesses operating hereabouts including several banks, wharves, stores, schools, churches and hospitals. During World War II most industries closed down but some continued until 1946 when they all came back online thanks largely to stimulus money given by Franklin D Roosevelt during his New Deal coalition government days before he died at age 94 leaving office just months later%. After World War II most industrial closures happened throughout Appalachia but Roanoke Rapids bounced back quickly developing into one of four post-waraleigh Towns leading up until it joined Raleigh as an incorporated city on July 1st 1969 following ratification by voters via referendum ballot measure creating then-new Council form with mayoral term lengths set at three years instead of two years then current Council term length set at staggered 4 year terms giving residents more frequent opportunity for election without having everyone on City Council every 3 years like currently happens plus Mayor can be removed by vote or action without any serving period thereafter unlike City Council members who are elected conditionally on 2/3 majority regardless whether they want or not which has resulted inCouncil members becoming powerful lobbyists for their districts rather than representing their constituents effectively like currently happens

Many slaves escaped to Roanoke Rapids from upstate New York and other parts of New England due to unscrupulous owners who refused to give them passage south. In 1814, when America entered into war with Britain, Roanoke Rapids became an important military base. The town saw heavy combat during the War of 1812, and many buildings were destroyed or damaged during the fighting. After hostilities ended in 1815, Roanoke Rapids quickly resumed its normal course as a busy commercial center. However, it wasn't until 1822 that true progress began in Roanoke Rapids when John Randolph created what would become known as Randolph College – one of North Carolina's leading educational institutions at this time! Over time, Roanoke Rapids' fortunes declined as industry switched from farming to manufacturing. But despite these challenges, people continued to come here for everythingfrom shopping malls to music festivals! And today – despite all of its troubles – RoankeRapidss still boasts some of the best living conditions in North Carolina!
The area now known as Roanoke Rapids was originally part of the Cherokee Nation. The town was founded in 1827 by General Nathaniel Banks, and it became a key stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1865, Roanoke Rapids was renamed Portsmouth after Rear Admiral John Pendergast, who played a major role in suppressing the slave trade in America. The town experienced some significant growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s, thanks to its position at the crossroads of several important railroad routes. It also benefited from proximity to several large manufacturing plants. However, Roanoke Rapids eventually lost its importance as a center of commerce and culture due to economic factors and population growth elsewhere.
