When the Roanoke Rapids school board voted to ban handguns from the town in 1957, they did so with the understanding that eventually everyone would have access to firearms. That didn't happen, and the guns in town continued to be used for hunting and target shooting. In 1984, a gun shop opened up in town and began selling pistols and rifles. The shop was open until 2003 when it was closed by the owner because of increased regulation from state government.
In 1735, a group of Englishmen landed on the shores of what is now Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. They were looking for a new land to create a colony and they discovered this area was ready for settlement. The men built their first log cabin here and started to trade with the native people. In time, the English people decided to move their colony to what is now Charlotte, North Carolina. But some of the original settlers stayed in Roanoke Rapids and started building more cabins and trading with the natives. This community grew until it had around 100 residents. After a few years, some of the Englishmen died in an accident and the colony lost its importance. But some of these pioneers continue to live in Roanoke Rapids today as part of its history.

Roanoke Rapids is a town in McDowell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,951 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Winston-Salem-High Point, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Roanoke Rapids was founded by Scotsmen in 1795 as a trading post on the James River. The town became an important shipping point on the Roanoke River and developed into a commercial center after the construction of the Roanoke Canal in 1825. The canal helped to make Roanoke Rapids one of the most important inland ports in eastern North Carolina. In 1925, Roanoke Rapids became an incorporated city and remains that way today. The town was first settled by Scotsmen who arrived in1795 during the American Revolution as part of General George Washington's army fighting against Lord Cornwallis' British forces. At first, these men were farmers who grew crops and raised livestock near their homes in rural McDowell County. However, over time, some of these men decided to establish themselves as traders and entrepreneurs within their new community along the James River – which they named "Rabanahara." As trade increased between British Canada and America during this time period, Rabanahara quickly established itself as one of America's leading maritime communities. By 1800, Rabanahara had become home to over 100 Scottish businesses includingaversmiths, dyers and shippers Along with its well-educated Scots residents - many of whom had fled Glasgow for independence from GreatBritain – Rabanahara also boasted one of America's earliest professional societies: The Scotch Academy (later renamedthe American Philosophical Society). This highly respected society met monthly at Rabanahara until 1824 when it relocated to Philadelphia afterSamuel Morse inventedTelegraphy there! As AMERICA began experiencing rapid economic growth following Independence - especially thanks to tariffs levied by President George Washington - various entrepreneurs began looking for opportunities within newly created Utopia called "Tariff City." One such entrepreneur was John Southerland who operated a millinery business adjacent to Rabananaharra wharf known simply as "Southerland’s Mill" from 1799 until his death in 1815 at age 72 years old. During Southerland’s reign - Tariff Cityboomed with activity thanks to surging exports generated by growing country tensions around Europe combined with increasing demand from Anglo-American consumers for high quality American manufactured goods… primarily textiles! Unfortunately for Southerland and his milliners – he never achieved any real success beyond modest levels due largelyto competition from newcomers like James Kempton whose operations flourished despite high tariffs! Another early pioneer associated with Tariff Citywas Elijah Bledsoe – owner/operatorof a successful agricultural enterprise focused exclusively upon raising cotton ateorgeous landscapes known collectively asBledsoe’s Ridge or “Bledsoe Bottomlands” located eastward extending downriver towards where later Gaston County would be formed! In additionto Bledsoe & Kempton; other noteworthy entrepreneursduring this period include Archibald Macleod whose successful brickyardand limekiln activities dominated southernmost Johnston County; Alexander Spruce whose successful distillery contributionhelped contribute significantlyto Appalachian coal production during this period; David Laird whose successful printing pressadded valueto local merchants' products; John Whiteheadwhose unsuccessful claims to fame included buildingthe largest sawmill westof Kentucky (!); Gideon Welleswhose successful lumbering enterprisesproduced much needed woodworking supplies within TariffCity during this era…..But it was not just industrialists & businessmen prosperingduringthis boom decade that characterized TariffCity however! Many female pioneers alsocomponentized these burgeoning businesses becomingknown collectivelyas “The Lady Capitalists”……….During this tumultuous timescapechairedumerous talented women seeking opportunity & adventure outsideOf traditional maledominated spheres!! After successfully navigating difficult internal political challenges preceding& ensuingthe Civil War –TariffCity rapidly recoveredthanks largely TO AMERICAN WOMEN!!! After Reconstruction endedin 1865 following Union victory over Confederate armies at Appomattox Court House—- numerousfemale businesswomen continuedTo thriveso prominently alongside theirmale counterparts throughout THIS pivotal Era !! LaterStill remaining extant are several noteworthyToday serving Female Business Ownerswithin our communityincluding Judy Rowe president/CEOof Pinnacle Coal Incorporated & Jackie Cantor CEOofthejustopened Canopy Growth Corporation…………..So why do we keep forgetting about TariffCity? The Roanoke Rapids community began as a small settlement on the banks of the Catawba River in 1865. The first Homecoming celebration in the community was held in 1868 and during its early years, it was a primarily white population. Over time, however, black residents began to arrive and join the community. In 1902, black-owned businesses began to open in Roanoke Rapids and over time this led to increased social stability within the community. In 1957, Roanoke Rapids became an incorporated town and over time it continued to grow with more businesses opening up and more people coming into the town. The town has since seen significant growth which has helped it become one of the most vibrant communities in North Carolina.
