The first permanent English settlement in what would become Gastonia County was established in 1635 by Sir Walter Raleigh and his followers as an outpost on the Yadkin River near modern-day Ranome Rapids. In 1712 a group of settlers led by Colonel James Tryon founded an independent state within present-day North Carolina called Johnston's Valley after their commander, General John Johnson. Johnston's Valley included much of Gaston County but also extended into portions of Wake and Durham counties today. In 1827 Ranome Rapids became part of Johnston's Valley when it was detached from Wake County and merged with Gaston County to form this current county. Prior to its incorporation into Gaston County, Ranome Rapids served as an unofficial capital of that county during its early years due to its strategic location on the Roanoke River between two large towns – Cary and Gastonia – making it convenient for government officials and residents alike. In 1924 Ranome Rapids Dry Dock Company formed to develop oil reserves off the riverbank; however, production ceased soon after due to low returns on investment. At one point during its heyday (1928-1939), RanomeRapids employed over 1,500 people directly or indirectly across several industries including engineering services, seafood processing/marketing/distribution/wholesale sales/fairs etc.; however these days activity largely focuses on providing education opportunities for local children through both public school systems as well as private schools across Gastonia Countys two adjacent municipalities: Carrboro (north) and Hillsborough (south). Despite some recent setbacks (such as damage caused by Hurricane Floyd in October 2015), overall development has shown promise for future generations with plans underway for even more ambitious infrastructure projects such as replacement or expansion of aging highways and bridges; new industrial developments; retail development; renewable energy initiatives; cultural programming opportunities; restaurants etc.; all designed to create value for everyone involved in their construction or operation!
