Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina is located in the U.S. state of North Carolina and is part of the Brunswick County metropolitan area. The population was 9,873 at the 2010 census. Roanoke Rapids is an incorporated town that straddles both banks of the Intracoastal Waterway and lies within the borders of several counties: Brunswick, Burke, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Graham, Harnett, Johnston and Jonesborough. It has a waterfront community and two downtown areas- one on the waterfront near Interstate 95 and one on Broad Street between Patton Boulevard and US 17 (the main drag). The first permanent European settlement in what is now Roanoke Rapids was made by Captain John Smith in 1619 when he sailed upriver from Jamestown to explore a new land grants given to him by King George II of England as part of his Virginia Plantations program. Smith named his new settlement "New Town" after himself because he wanted it to signal English interests in this promising region along the then-new North Carolina coast. In 1638 Nathaniel Bacon moved from Providence Plantation northward into what became Brunswick County as part of a larger British Invasion campaign against French Acadia (present day Quebec) during which many settlers were killed or captured including Bacon himself. After some successful years growing rice on their original site claimed by both New Town and nearby Greenville they returned to their rice fields in 1641 when English troops under General Monck landed at Cape Fear River leading to open warfare with Native American groups known today as Cherokee Indians who had earlier occupied much present day Georgia and Tennessee before migrating downriver over land owned by Chief Powhatan whose people also hunted deer, bear and other game on these same waterways for food supply purposes according to Alexander Cadwallader who wrote about this period about 1/4 century later: "In those days there were three Nations living together upon these waters; one called Creekshawne[?], another Catawba[?], &c., &c., all descended from Chief Powhatan." A second permanent European settlement was made at Portsmouth Point opposite present day Portsmouth where James Ifield established a trading post in 1715 with goods brought overland through South America back then still under Spanish rule prior to its incorporation into Great Britain as Virgin Islands early that year following its independence from Spain following a series of revolts led by Governor Don Fernando de la Cruz y Arellano against royalmandate while Royalist forces besieged St John's town on Antigua Bay until relieved by British troops under Admiral Vernon Apr 26th1765 - this event marks modern day Roanoke Rapids' earliest official connection with mainland North America although Hambden's wharf lay six miles upstream across tidal creek providing saltwater seafood for local fishermen for centuries before being filled in 1852 flooding destroyed most buildings ashore rendering them uninhabitable however remnants remain standing today as Historic District Landmarks
Rockingham County was erected in 1753 from parts of Orange and Craven counties. It was named for the Rockingham family, who had been landholders there since the time of English colonization. The county seat was at Durham, but it moved to Roanoke Rapids in 1851. In 1868, the western part of the county became Wake County while eastern Brunswick County (later Anson County) remained in Rockingham.
