This period of growth marked a turning point for Roanoke Rapids – it became an important hub for trade and commerce within North Carolina. Over time, this prosperity helped drive rapid growth in both population and economy throughout the state. In 1938, Roanoke Rapids was renamed after James Fenton Randolph – one of its most notable early leaders who helped bring about significant changes to North Carolina’s political landscape during that time frame. Today, Roanoke Rapids remains an important center for local government – home to several local governments as well as various businesses and organizations including libraries and religious centers
The Roanoke Rapids area was the site of one of the most significant engagements in American history. On July 12, 1776, General George Washington and his Continental Army fought a bloody battle against British forces at Roanoke Rapids. The battle helped to secure America's independence from Great Britain and helped to Documentation that the United States is an independent country today.
