Reidsville is a city in McDowell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham–Fayetteville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Reidsville was founded in 1836 by Scots-Irish immigrants James and Anne Reids. The original name for the town was "Norman" but it was changed to Reidsville in 1838 after James' brother-in-law named it that. They were among the first Europeans to settle in what would become McDowell County and built a gristmill on present day West End Avenue (now called Hampton Roads Boulevard) which became one of the largest milling centers in southcentral Appalachia. In 1851, they erected a sawmill on Catawba River where it still stands today and also established a market garden east of town. The town prospered until the Panic of 1907 when farmers stopped putting money into their mills due to an economic depression caused by increased competition from other regions such as Dayton and Louisville, Kentucky. However, many old residents continue to live in Reidsville today and are proud of its history even though some aspects have since passed away like the original mill building which still stands but now houses a grocery store and several apartments; or West End Avenue which has been turned into an open-air mall with restaurants and shops removed from itsoriginal alignment.
