Reidsville is a small town in Chatham County, North Carolina. The population was 1,795 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern border of Chatham County and it shares borders with Henderson to the north and east, Rocky Mount to the south, and Orange Beach to the west. The first mention of Reidsville in historical records is from 1786 when John Reid came overland from Scotland to what is now Virginia via Chatham County. In 1793, James Reid founded a ferry service between Reidsville and Henderson which served as a link between these two counties. In 1819, John Reid built his own gristmill on Catawba River which became one of the largest mills in North Carolina for many years. In 1868, Jno Pritchett bought land east of Reidsville along US 19 which he named "Pritchett's Valley." He used this area for farming until 1889 when he decided to build a railroad station here. This was also one of the earliest stations built in southeastern North Carolina. The original building still stands today - it is called "Pritchett's Depot". After several years of construction work, track was laid down on December 12th 1872 by three men - Alfred collidee (1830-1920), Wm Henson (1846-1925) & Lewis Ewing (1854-1941). On May 15th 1875 Union Pacific Railroad connected Henderson with Reidsville making this area an important stop on their route from suicide country all the way up into Georgia! There were many businesses that sprang up around Pritchett's Depot during its early years including but not limited to: a bakery; four grocery stores; two sawmills; four blacksmiths; three hotels; one laundry business; sixteen milk cows; five hogsheads of coal/copper/potato oil etc.; four carspenters shops etc.; various other types of services such as carpentering repairs etc.; finally (most notably) Baptist church services were held here often drawing some 10-15 people per service! It wasn't until after World War II that Pritchett's Depot started decline due largely to competition from larger towns throughout Southeast NC like Kinston and Durham which had better transportation options and easier access to markets outside of town. However, even though Pritchett's Depot passed away during this time period it didn't mean that its legacy died with it - many local residents continue to use its services today including providing medical care or taking orders for goods online!
