Reidsville, North Carolina is home to the first optical store in the area and one of the earliest in the United States. The store was opened by Mr. and Mrs. John H. Reid in 1892 and it is still in business today. In 1907, they opened a second store in Charlotte,North Carolina which became an international center for optical products. In 1951, they founded their own company which became known as Optical Industries, Incorporated (OII). OII produced devices used in vision research and development until its acquisition by Philips Corporation in 1984. From 1984-1998, Optical Industries was part of Philips AG (PHIL) based at Heidelberg Germany before being spun off into its own company again within Phillips Corporation. When he retired from his position with Phillips Corporation on October 1st 1998, Dr. James Fenton took over as President and CEO of OII effective November 1st 1998 resigning from his role at PHIL). Drs./Ms Fenton had been with Philips since 1974 when he joined them as Vice President/General Manager for Research & Development where he led product launches such as the LaserDisc player and Monochrome TV sets; during this time period he also served as Chief Operating Officer (COO) responsible for all aspects of day-to-day operations including human resources management, marketing research and product strategy development - an important role given that Philips had no physical plant outside of Germany where employees could be mobilized to produce products under production line conditions

Reidsville is a small town in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located about 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Raleigh and 10 miles (16 km) northeast of Chapel Hill. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. In 1884, General James Longstreet's brigade advanced from Reidsville to Petersburg Peninsula to relieve General John Johnston's force there under siege by Confederate forces led by General Robert Ewell. The community took its name from Reverend Nathaniel "Rick" Reids, a Baptist minister who settled in the area in 1857 and became pastor at First Presbyterian Church. The first post office was founded here on October 28, 1881, and remained in operation until it closed on February 15, 1976. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 square mile (2 km²), all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 993 people, 434 households, and 277 families residing in the town. The population density was 362 people per square mile (147/km²). There were 512 housing units at an average density of 165 per square mile (66/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 2% African American; 0% Native American; and 1% Asian Pacific Islander
