By 1900, about 60% of the population of Reidsville were Irish Catholics (an increase from 15% when settlement began). In 1911, Drury College opened its doors here and soon became one of North Carolina's leading educational institutions with a growing student body composed mostly of Irish Americans (predominantly Catholic) and their children. Many people associated with Duke University also spent time here while attending business or law school; among these were many leaders in later periods of American history such as Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr.. In 1940, during World War II%, Reidsville formed part of RAF Basking Ridge (later known as Ramstein Air Base), Germany; over 4500 European Allied airmen died here while training or fighting in Europe during World War II. After 1945, many local businesses closed down because they could no longer compete against online shopping options available at that time - including many owned by Irish Americans who had lost their jobs during those years' post-war boom period. In 1834, Reidsville was incorporated as a city with an estimated population of 10,000 people. In 1870, the city burned down due to an accidental fire. Reconstruction followed in which many jobs were lost because of lack of industry during this time period. However, in 1931 Reidsville regained its status as an important community thanks to its role in developing Raleigh-Durham International Airport!.
