The city's Manufacturing sector has been dominant since it began producing pistols and revolvers for law enforcement use beginning in the early 1800s. Pistol manufacturing continued until World War II when it switched over to military production due to increasing demand for handguns by both American forces and Japanese forces during World War II

The community was named for General John C. Reids (1814-1880), a Confederate general and member of the Union staff who helped organize and lead the assault on Petersburg during the American Civil War. In 1878, Reidsville had a post office with only two letters open: "R" for "reid" and "Ville". In 1907, a new post office was built with four letters: "R", "D", "T", and "I". The name changed to Reidsville in 1929 due to its location on I-95 near mile marker 231 (the old reid sign still stands). According to the 2000 U.S. Census, Reidsville has a population of 1,792 people; 1,752 of whom are white and 138 black (6%). Hispanic or Latino residents make up 6% of the population. The median age is 49 years; 26% are under 18 years; 11% are between 18 and 24 years; 21% are 25 or older; 5% have no college degree. There are 174 households out of which 31% have children under aged 18 living with them, 50% plan to marry soon after high school graduation, 41% have no husband present workarounds available (they use family members or friends as their primary source of income), 16% report being below poverty line but increase when controlling for other factors such as education level and mother's occupation/wage earners.), 9%. A total of 54 families reside in this town while there are no public schools that serve students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade according to recent data from NCES

Reidsville, or simply Reidsville, is a town in Granite County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for General Benjamin Reeves who fought in the American Revolution and later served as a U.S. Senator from North Carolina. The first settler in what is now Reidsville was James Robertson who arrived in 1785. He built a cabin on the site of what is now known as Robinson's Store and Post Office just off I-40 near mile marker 154. By 1810, there were twenty three settlers living in Reidsville when General Robert Ewell founded Moore Townsite on his estate six miles to the east on Panther Creek which he named after himself and other military leaders of the Revolution including Nathanael Greene and John Steele (father of Steele Mountain). In 1847, Wm Henson organized what would become Granite Methodist Episcopal Church in Reidsville which had been established two years earlier by Reverend David Sloan among others with help from Bishop James Mclntyre of Gastonia (later Asheville). In 1849 Granite Academy opened up within Presbyterian School District No 2 which included Reidsville along with Decatur (now eastern Durham), Chapel Hill (now Chatham), Henderson (now western Henderson County), Rocky Mount (now western McDowell County), Union Mills (later Pee Dee) and Wiseboro outside of Raleigh city limits to train future ministers like Rev Dr Elijah Whitehead who became one of America’s most famous preachers beginning with his preaching at Second Baptist Church located today on 9th Street NW between Walnut and Elm Streets just across from University City Medical Center ). In 1860 George Stephenson donated land for what would become Willowbrook Cemetery some ten miles north of Reidsville where Confederate Generals Richard Anderson and Nathaniel Banks buried their dead during the American Civil War . In 1865 Confederate General Jubal Early died at Willowbrook while retreating southward after being defeated at Stones River . So too did Union Major General Averill Harriman who had accompanied Early westward that day upon his victory at Chickamauga over Confederate forces under Jubal Early Jr.. A few weeks later on July 9th 1865 while traveling through Johnston County looking for early resistance leader Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Jno Giles decided to encampment about four miles northeast of present day Wilson Station off US 301 he discovered an unoccupied cabin belonging to white man William Forrer sitting alone atop a knoll overlooking Willoughby Creek about five miles southeast ofpresent day Wilson Station nestled within Southeastern hospitality vegetable farmstead known today as Forrer Cabin ruins dating back to c1880 .) A little more than a year later On October 3rd 1865 At approximately 10 Pm Wm Forrer moved into position from nearby Cabin spotting movement coming down hill towards fortification only 30 yards away seen moving around trees were privates Josephine Forrer & her husband Samuel Farrington also wife Eliza Batten & Children Hester 4 mos old Enoch 2 mos old Charles Wesley both boys playing inside fortification entered fortification unloading supplies before returning home ) At 11:00 pm same night Private Edward Crouse entered fortification found dead behind rock wall shot thru heart
Reidsville was founded in 1760 by James Reids, a Welshman who came to North Carolina in the late 1700s. The town was named for John Reids, an ancestor of James and his brother-in-law William Reids. The first post office in Reidsville was established in 1761. By 1775, the population of Reidsville had grown to about 150 people. In 1811, the town voted to join the Confederacy and fight against the United States during the War for Independence. However, when Confederate General Robert Ewell arrived in town on July 12, 1811, he found no resistance and left without taking any prisoners or arms. The town soon surrendered and became part of Confederate Richmond County. After the war ended, many people returned to Reidsville and it gradually grew back up to its prewar size. By 1865, there were about 350 residents living in Reidsville.
