The first textile mill in North Carolina was built in Reidsville by Captain James Robertson and his wife, Kitty. In 1860, Colonel Hoke Richardson Reids purchased the mill from Captian James Robertson and renamed it Richardson Manufacturing Company Ltd., which continued to operate until 1922. Colored people made up a large percentage of Richardson Manufacturing Company Ltd.'s workforce throughout its history; however, this did not prevent race riots that took place throughout much of America during the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1922, Richardson Manufacturing Company Ltd. merged with United States Fibers Corporation to form United States Fibers & Textiles Corporation (USFTC). USFTC operated several mills until 1976 when it closed down all its mills except one due to economic reasons. However, USFTC's legacy continues on as one of North Carolina's leading manufacturers of textiles and other clothing products exported around the world.
