The community was founded by John and Rebecca Reid in 1799 as a farmstead on what is now owned by Catawba College. At first, it was a simple Settlement: only three houses and twelve acres (5 ha) of land. In 1824, when John Reid died, his wife Rebecca took over the management of their property and made it into an agricultural township with a post office and five stores. The first school in Reidsville was built in 1827; four years later, school trustees named this building for their father-in-law John Reid Jr., who had died that year. In 1851, after much discussion among local farmers about how to improve education for their children within reach of all residents, Rebecca Reid donated land to Catawba College for its new college campus; this gift remain one of the most important gifts ever given to a university in North Carolina. At that time there were just ten students at Catawba College; today more than two thousand students are enrolled at Catawba Colleges across fourteen states and fifty-six countries! In 1865, when General Nathan Bedford Forrest invaded South Carolina during the American Civil War and captured Columbia City,[1] Reidsville became one of seven townships near Columbia—the others being Greeneville (now Durham), Fayetteville (now Winston-Salem), Kinston (now Gastonia), Iredell (now Pickens), Orangeburg (now Spartanburg), Uniontown (now Mount Airy). After Confederate forces burned Columbia City on December 15th 1863,[2] Reidsville's citizens went out into the streets to prevent further destruction by Confederate troops; they succeeded in driving them back from town limits onto additional plantations belonging to Major General Jubal Early.[3] By early 1865 most people had moved away or left for other parts of South Carolina because life under Confederate rule appeared increasingly unsafe. He noted thatguns could kill or wound many people easily and suggested that they should only be used by experienced warriors or those who knew how to use them effectively. In 1847 Aveling published an article called “How To Use Firearms Safely” which detailed how guns could be used safely in order to protect oneself from harm. Reidsville is a small town located in McDowell County, North Carolina. The population was 3,913 at the 2010 census. Reidsville is part of the Asheville-Cary Combined Statistical Area. The community was named after General James A. Reids, who fought in the American Civil War and was wounded at Gettysburg. In 1892, the company town of Reidsville was established on a tract of land that had been donated by General Reids. By 1907, all of McDowell County had been organized into counties, and Reidsville became one of the new county towns in McDowell County. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Reidsville were farmers and their families who came from Cumberland County, Virginia in 1815. They arrived on horseback and soon started to settle near the river which they named Catawba because it looked like a big cat when seen from above. When they learned about the gold mines nearby, these early settlers decided to move into this new territory rather than wait for permission from their government to prospect for gold. By 1824, many local shippers had built up business transporting goods down the Catawba River to Charlotteport on Walland Island until there were only three boats left that could transport goods worth $1 per ton back upriver each way! This created some problems as people began speculation about where all this valuable treasure might be hidden and whether anyone would ever find it! Eventually word got out that someone had found a small amount of gold near what is today known as downtown Reidsville (then called East Main Street). People quickly gathered around this discovery while others continued to trade salt pork forGold nuggets at various locations upstream along the Catawba River! Eventually enough excitement developed around this new development that traders set up shop on Second Street between Broadway and High Bridge just west of present day Market Square! As more people moved into this fledgling community there were also problems with malaria being an issue due to lack of proper water supplies - something which would later become more rampant during Reconstruction Era times when resources were scarce across much of America! However with hard work and determination by both men and women alike things eventually improved as businesses flourished including two banks & several successful restaurants/stores before World War II brought even more prosperity!
Reidsville is a town in central North Carolina, United States. The population was 6,405 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro-High Point-Winston Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1763, General James Johnston and his Regiment of Mounted Riflemen invaded and sacked Reidsville for goods taken by the Cherokee Indians as they made their way through the area on their annual hunting trip. The raid caused much anger among local residents and led to an increase in trade with surrounding states. In 1805, George Catlett founded a school in Reidsville which became one of the leading educational institutions in eastern North Carolina. The town's first post office was established in 1810. In 1865, Reidsville experienced its first tornado when it was hit by a severe gale that swept across the county from Asheville to Winston-Salem. By 1900, Reidsville had become one of the most important cotton towns in eastern North Carolina due to its production of raw cotton textiles and its location within easy driving distance of markets in Raleigh and Charlotte. In 1951, when Interstate 95 bypassed Greensboro and went through downtown instead, Reidsville lost much of its business andresidential development along I-95 as businesses moved away to be closer to other major highways.
