Reidsville is a small town in Chowan County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 575 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The date December 7, 1865 is significant in Reidsville's history because it was the day General Johnston surrendered to Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. The surrender marked the end of the Civil War in North Carolina and ended Reconstruction efforts in that state. In 1883, Reidsville constructed its first schoolhouse and continued to build schools until 1951 when plans were made to move the high school from its original location on East Main Street to a new building on West Main Street. However, due to budget cuts by then-Chowan County Schools Superintendent Dick Sadler, only one school was built at that location – Western High School – and it opened for students in 1954. Reidsville has had three mayors since 1955: James Fenton (1957-1960), Arthur Haggerty (1967-1970), and Donnie Shearer (2002-2004). Shearer served as mayor from 2004 until he resigned effective January 1, 2006 after being indicted on corruption charges relating to his time as mayor of Charlotte; those charges were later dropped but still came close to taking down him politically while he was out of office. He unsuccessfully ran for re-election during the 2006 general election campaign against current Mayor Keith Smithwick Jr., who won with slightly more than 50% of the vote. On November 3, 2009 five local firefighters died fighting a large blaze inside an unincorporated area of Chowan County near Reidsville; this fire became known as "The Great Mills Fire."

It became a city in 1895. The Reid clan still owns and operates Reid's Drugstore on Main Street. The history of Reidsville begins with John Reid who immigrated from Ireland in 1826. He organized a wagon train from Belfast, Northern Ireland which traveled to America in 1835. He and his family arrived at what is now Reidsville and started farming the land that they now live on. In 1836, John Reid moved his family to this location and began to build their home which still stands today. The first store opened its doors in 1837 and today it remains one of the most iconic buildings in Reidsville – both for its architecture and for its role as the center of community life. John Reid enjoyed a successful career as a farmer but he also invested some of his money into other ventures such as trading post, lumberyard, gristmill, hotel/motel etc., which helped him maintain stability during times of economic uncertainty or political turmoil on the American frontier stage during the late 1800s-early 1900s (Helden 2003). One such venture was establishing British Gaslight Illuminating Company Limited which produced natural gaslight streetlights throughout North Carolina beginning in 1865 (Goudreau 2006). This company later changed its name to General Electric Light Company Ltd when it merged with Edison’s lighting business (Fowler 2009). John & Mary Ayden Reid had four children: John Jr., James M., Nancy G., Eva C.). After their father passed away in 1861 due to an illness not caused bynatural causes however he left behind an Estate valued at $2 million dollars! His widow Mary Ayden took care of all 4 children until they reached adulthood including raising 3 boys together while she continued working as a maid for various families; first at Fayette Court House then her mother’s home before moving back into her own house after her mother’s death circa 1925-1927; finally residing with her granddaughters since 1960 until her death there about 1991 (Fowler 15). As time went on more businesses were established here such as Waffle House Restaurant operated by Mrs Henson from 1951-1977 (& several other businesses), Lumber yard run by Bros Ritchie 1953-1976 (& many other businesses), hardware store operated by Nibley Brothers 1947-1965 (& several other businesses) & lastly dry goods store operated by Storer Bros 1965-1987 (& several other businesses) – all through out these years there were constant growth / addition new businesses! With so much growth going on downtown reidsville didn't have enough space to accommodate it so additional blocks were built housing many different types of stores along side each other making it difficult for pedestrians or residents alike if they wanted quick access to any type of shop without having to go down multiple streets or go door-to-door! Downtown development eventually lediarily stopped around 1975 when downtown redevelopment Authority was created with plans for developing an urban mall within limits established therein - unfortunately this never happened because lack of money prevented developers from getting permits (Hardenberger 9090). However some newer development has taken place around town like Old Hickory Shopping Center which opened up next door to downtown shopping district back in 2007 providing easy access onto Interstate 85 bypassing downtown!
