In 1925, construction began on what would become Duke University's first main campus; Reidsville served as its administrative center until that time. In 1935-1936, Hurricane Floyd caused widespread damage to Raleigh and much of western North Carolina; Reidsville escaped unscathed but saw some heavy flooding which destroyed many homes and businesses. Despite this setback, business continued to grow rapidly throughout World War II; during peacetime, however, most jobs associated with university growth were eliminated or moved away from downtown Raleigh due to suburbanization and other development trends. After World War II ended,RDVites experienced rapid declines in their population due largely to two factors: educational changes within Randolph College (the city's largest school) and migration into other larger towns in McDowell County (which increased poverty rates). However, since 2000 RDVite growth has resumed with new housing developments increasingly targeting young professionals and families looking for access to quality education while living close enoughto work but not so close that daily errands are too difficult or inconveniently located. Today’s RDVites are proud members of their community and enjoy highly active social activities together including amateur golf tournaments held each spring at Oaks Golf Course adjacent to Historic First Baptist Church where dances are also regularly held during summer months followed by fireworks displays over Lake Kawassa early evening
