Reidsville is a town in Richland County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Durham–Chapel Hill–Winston-Salem market area. The first settler in Reidsville was John Reid who arrived in 1784. In 1812, James Henry Reids opened a gristmill on the west side of the county seat and became one of its most important residents and merchants. A post office was established in Reidsville in 1827, and a store was built on Church Street in 1835. In 1865, J.H. Reid's son John H. Reid bought land east of downtown for development into what would become Reidville Township; by 1870 it had grown to include parts of both Richland and Durham Counties. In 1892, Jameson Waddell purchased 640 acres (251 hectares) southeast of downtown from Poultry farmer Samuel Latham for $10 per acre ($2 million at current prices). Waddell named his new community "Reidville" after his father-in-law's birthplace near Richmond, England which he had visited as an infant years earlier while visiting family members there with his mother and sister Anna Lingley Waddell; construction began on the village within two months of purchase and eventually included 3 churches (Methodist Episcopal), 4 businesses (gristmills, stores, post office/laboratory & schoolhouse), 1 public square (Waddell Market), an agricultural fairgrounds (later renamed 'The Meadows'), 4 tennis courts (& a golf course later added) & 8 residences including 5 brick buildings now known as the Town Hall building & 6 frame homes now known as Old House Place; it soon boasted over 100 residents although only 10% were actually living in their original dwellings when they were developed because many moved to other nearby communities during this time period when central business districts were expanding or being built around larger centres such as Durham or Chapel Hill etc.; The first electric streetcar service ran between downtown Raleigh & Reidville on November 12th 1896 using horses pulled by four white mares called 'Minstrels'; reidville also boasted its very own water tower which served all areas except Raleigh proper until 1902 when that system became integrated with city services;population reached 3200 by 1910 however due to various factors such as World War I & II then competition from surrounding towns growth slowdowns residential development throughout much of 1920s 30s 40s 50s continued even into McCarthy Era but declined significantly after that until finally reaching 1999 population estimated at just under 2000 again by 2002 following major redevelopment project led by Mayor Bob Jones which increased commercial property values dramatically creating more jobs than ever before making Reidsville once again one of North Carolina's fastest growing communities
