Reidsville is a small town located in Chatham County, North Carolina. The population was 639 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area. The Reidsville Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The town was named after Reids family and their farmstead, which stood on a hill overlooking the village of Reidsville. In 1868, John Witherspoon Grant purchased the farmstead from the Reids family and made it his home. Grant developed agricultural interests in Reidsville and served as its first mayor from 1875 to 1878. He also became one of North Carolina's wealthiest men through his ownership of several plantations in eastern Chatham County. The Witherspoon Grant House is a national historic site located within the district. Reidsmoor Presbyterian Church is a historically significant congregation that meets in downtown Reidsville. It was founded in 1865 by Revs Samuel Reid and Andrew McKnight and features an original gable roofed church building with three stories (pictured). The congregation operates two other churches, Hope Lutheran Church and First Baptist church, both of which are also historically significant buildings.

Reidsville is a town in Gastonia County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham–Cleveland metropolitan area. The Reidsville Historic District covers parts of the town and consists of 158 contributing buildings and architecture from 1837 to 1957. The town was founded by John Reids and his family in 1794. They named their community after General Nathaniel Johnson who had been instrumental in suppressing slave rebellions in the state of North Carolina during the American Revolution. Johnson's military career spanned over twenty years and he played a significant role in suppressing many slave revolts across southern America including those in North Carolina. John Reids built a log cabin on what is now Main Street in 1794 which became his home for over sixty years until he sold it to Andrew Johnston in 1827. Andrew Johnston was an early settler who took up farming around this time and developed what is now downtown Reidsville along with other rural areas around Gastonia County. By 1830, Johnston had developed what is now known as the city center of Reidsville which included a tavern, shops, churches and schools. In 1837, John Reids' grandson join him business operations when he purchased The Court House Tavern from Andrew Johnston for $2,500 dollars cash plus 10% interest per year until it was paid off in full within five years During Reconstruction following the Civil War, most African Americans were re-educated and opportunities opened up for them through education programs offered by white society as well as work opportunities available through black mills or businesses such as grocery stores or carriages companies run by freedmen during that period called Reconstruction Era . Although some African Americans did manage to maintain their traditional ways of life such as working on farms or fishing ponds while living separately from white society they gradually lost access to education and jobs throughout much of the South due to Jim Crow laws enacted post-war Southern states . This exclusion led many African Americans relocated northward into Northern Cities during this time period where they experienced similar economic struggles although there were often more opportunities for advancement than SOUTHWEST Southerners experiencing similar difficulties . In 1907 James Fenton bought land adjacent to downtown from Andrew Johnston located between US Highway 276 (now I-85) & US Highway 27 (now US 41). He renamed it "Fenton's Addition" after himself while also developing additional properties holdings adjacent to his property east of Interstate 85 & west of US 421 (later I-95). By 1912 Fenton had developed one mile long main street running parallel W/I 85 & existing Business Boulevard witch bordered onto Fenton's Addition & intersected SR 912 just south east of present day Dayton Blvd Entrance
On July 1, 1836, Reidsville became the town of Addison in Randolph County. The name was changed to Reid on November 3, 1852. On October 30, 1907, Reid was incorporated as a city by an act of the North Carolina General Assembly.
