Reidsville is a small town in Union County, North Carolina. The population was 1,471 at the 2000 census. It is located in the northwestern part of the county and is bordered by Yancey to the north, Morganton to the east, Robeson County to the southeast, and Gaston County to the southwest. Reidsville straddles two counties - Union and Randolph - with a total area of just under 7 square miles (18 km²). The history of Reidsville goes back more than 130 years. In 1835, three men named John Reid came from Scotland and founded a farm on what is now Main Street in Reidsville. They named their land Reidstown after their father who had come over from Scotland as a young man. The first store in town was built on what is now Second Avenue in 1841. A post office was established here in 1865. In 1892, when Randolph County was created from parts of Union and Gaston Counties, Reidsville became part of Randolph County. At that time it consisted only of a few scattered farms along Main Street and Railroad Road between Morganton and Robeson Counties. Today there are over fifty businesses located here including several large grocery stores as well as numerous other types of businesses such as banks, churches, schools, doctor's offices etc.. AsRandolphCounty grew larger it needed more transportation facilities so a depot was built on what is now Fourth Avenue near downtown in 1904-05. This served as an important piece of infrastructure for Randolph County until it closed down completely in 1964 due to budget cuts caused by President Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty policies which were implemented during his presidency! Today much of downtown Reidsville remains unchanged with its original architecture although most recent development has taken place on 4th Avenue within walking distance of many local shops and restaurants while also incorporating new technologies into its business operation such as online ordering through websites like Amazon or Walmart!

Reidsville is a town in McDowell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,847 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known inhabitant of Reidsville was James Ransom who settled in 1785 near present-day Greenville. He named his land "Rees's Valley" after Reidsville, Virginia which he had visited while on a military campaign against Indians in 1777. In 1814, General Edmund Kirby Smith decided to change the name to Reidsville because it was more centrally located and would be easier for people to find their way around given its location on "the road from Wilmington to Raleigh." In 1824, Captain John Witherspoon and his brother Ebenezer organized a wagon train of fifty men from Cherokee Nation led by Colonel James Aiken that traveled through McDowell County on their way to sell goods at Elizabeth City. They were met by Nathaniel Bacon who offered them land if they could build him a house. They built him an old log cabin which still stands today as Bacon's House Museum within the boundaries of Reidsville Village Park Historic District. Captain Witherspoon and his party continued their journey northward and arrived at what is now Hunters Chapel on July 12th 1824 just before sunrise local time (July 13th EDT). This event marked the beginning of what would become one of America's most important transportation corridors- the Ocmulgee River Road- when European settlers began arriving in large numbers in search of new lands to trade with native Americans. After reaching Hunters Chapel, Captain Witherspoon followed the Ocmulgee River downstream until he reached Fort Fisher where he disembarked his passengers and started trading goods with local Native American tribes for corn and other items they possessed valuable enough to purchase from Europeans such as cannons, horses, clothing and other luxury items. On December 5th 1824 while Captain Witherspoon was attending a council meeting held at Fort Fisher regarding regulations governing traders entering Indian Country unannounced without proper authority, hostilities ensued between white settlers and Cherokee Nation forces resulting in several civilian casualties including Captains Witherspoon and Aiken who were captured along with many supplies they had acquired while trading inside Cherokee Nation territory
On November 10, 1835, Reidsville was founded by James W. Reid on the present site of the city. Reid's land included present-day North Carolina's eastern border with Virginia. The town was named for him and his wife, Rachelle. It grew rapidly, and by 1850 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1852, Reid built the first school in Reidsville and soon began to provide schools for nearby farms and villages. In 1855, he donated land to the city to become its central square. In 1871, Reid died at age 90 years; his legacy remains powerful in Reidsville today.
