Reidsville is a small town in Duplin County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,568 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous community in Duplin County and the only incorporated municipality within its borders. The first settler in Reidsville was Levi Coffin who arrived in 1828 from Virginia. He built a log cabin on current-day US 71. In 1829 he married Anna Maria Hardin and they started to cultivate some of their land which they soon sold to other settlers. A post office was established here in 1830, named after Reidsville's founder, Levi Coffin. In 1835 two sisters—Moses Waddell and Elizabeth Tipton—married John Hargrave and started a grocery store that remain open to this day; it is now known as "Hargrave's." In 1840 Joseph Bogue settled here with his family. They ran a general store until 1865 when they moved to Greeneville where they continued to operate a grocery store until 1888 when they merged with Waddells Store & Grocery Company of Greensboro into one national chain enterprise called "Bogue Bros." During the American Civil War (1861-1865) many people from Reidsville enlisted in Union army ranks including General Thomas J. Jackson who fought at First Battles of Bull Run (July 1861), Second Battle of Bull Run (March 1862), Siege of Petersburg (April 1865) and Battle of Franklin (May 6, 1865). One local resident served as an aide for General Robert Easley during his Campaign against Johnston located near Raleigh on April 15-23 1863: "He acted as driver for General Robert Easley during his march through central North Carolina" Joseph Bogue also operated an airfield near Reidsville during World War II which served as RAF Station No 4453 'The Gulls'. After the war ended he retired from running his grocery business but still uses it as part of his personal home today while living on original plantation holdings around town acquired by him via purchase between 1916-1920; these include more than 50 acres (~200 hectares) of rolling tobacco plantations dating back to 1795/96 which are still used today for rawhide production purposes....Reidsville has left behind much evidence indicative of its important role throughout history including its community center having been erected on what once were cotton gin buildings; brick churches built following Methodism's "log church" style - essentially using logs found lying about local woods - courthouse having been dedicated December 10th 1919 featuring hardwood floors instead of marble...It should be noted that not all residents or businesses associated with ReidsVILLE have survived over time - such as Hargrave’s Store closed down around 1965 when company merged with Waddells Store & Grocery Company ('Bogue Bros.'); however even though many businesses have closed down there continue various active citizens groups like the ChamberOfCommerce who sponsor numerous cultural events each year calendarmarked by formal dinner dances given at their hallowed building; annual pancake breakfast fundraiser hosted by Rotary Club funds scholarships for needy students residing within close proximity)...

He named his new settlement for his father-in-law Colonel James Hays (or Head). The first post office opened in 1792 and operated under the name of Chapel Hill until 1800 when it changed to Reidsville after General James Hays's home near present day Gaston Avenue in Raleigh. The first store was built on present day Main Street by Reverend Samuel Duncombe in 1802 which served as a meeting place for local farmers and traders before becoming an all night market place known as "The Hub" later shortened to just "Reid". By 1830, Reidsville had a two-story brick courthouse with twelve rooms that served as county court house and jail until 1908 when it burned down due to arson; this event mark the end of use of this building for judicial purposes within Lancaster County In 1819, General James Hays moved his headquarters from Bathurst Court House located near Raleigh to what is now called Reidsville where he started issuing orders through Major Abraham Botkin commanding all troops east of Virginia Territory including those forces besieging Fort Fisher on Cape Fear River In 1828, Confederate Brigadier General Nathaniel Prentiss established Camp Pendleton south of today's downtown Reinhardt while Majestic Corps troops were quartered at Forney Mill north of town In 1840 Unionist Major Rufus King organized Cavalry Regiment #1 headquarters at what is now First Baptist Church with several hundred men southeast of town During Reconstruction following World War II North Carolina passed an act providing amnesty to any Confederate soldiers remaining in state prisons so many reintegrated into society here such as veteran general Cornelius Wistar who founded Wistar University In 1951 local resident Clifford Berry started selling ice cream from his truck outside First Baptist Church which eventually led to Berry's Coffee & Donuts open up next door starting off as just a small shack serving muffins and coffee until finally opening up into their current location in 1957 Since then REIDSVILLE has seen numerous businesses open up along with many residents moving into areas closer to work or school including some coming from outlying towns like Gastonia or High Point which have since become part of the Charlotte metropolitan area
