The first gunsight in Raleigh was erected on May 12, 1792 by Captain John Beaufort of HMS "Prince of Wales" during his occupation of the city. The present-day site of the old fortifications at Fort Raleigh was purchased by Colonel James Johnston in 1824 and became known as Johnston's Hill. In 1838, a new battery was built at Fort Raleigh by Lieutenant Colonel Robert Ewing. This battery became known as Ewing's Battery. In 1865, a new battery was built at Fort Raleigh by Major General Edwin M. Johnson and named for General Robert Ewing. This battery became known as Richardson's Battery. In 1886, an addition to Richardson's Battery was constructed at Fort Raleigh which became known as Campbell's Tower. It served as a command post for artillerymen until 1917 when it was decommissioned and replaced withFort Buchanan Park Headquarters Annex Building which also houses the Regional History Museum located within the walled park complex.. The first gun sights in Raleigh were probably mounted on cannon or muskets from before 1792 because they are not mentioned in any local records dating back to that time period. One possibility is that these early sighting devices were not very reliable and were only used for show purposes or during battle drills; however, more likely they were simply simple peepholes into which someone could watch enemy movements while rangefinding their cannons or muskets from a distance. Because there are no other references to such devices existing prior to 1792, it is reasonable to assume that these gunsights originated with Captain John Beaufort and his HMS "Prince of Wales" during this time period - although they may have been based elsewhere first (e.g., Portsmouth).
