The museum also has on display some of North Carolina's earliest road signs including a functioning proto-jeepney that was used by pioneer John Cusick in 1794.

Raleigh, North Carolina is a city in the state of North Carolina and the county seat of Wake County. The population was 1,515 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Durham River, about 15 miles northeast of Charlotte and 25 miles northwest of Raleigh. Its history dates back to 1795 when Englishman Robert Carr submitted a proposal for a new capital on what is now Bank Street in downtown Raleigh. Carr's plan called for an open-air market place with walls around it to protect citizens from Indians who might attack during peace negotiations. In 1819, Raleigh was named after General James Johnston's victorious army which had fought its way through North Carolina during the American War of Independence. After Johnston's death in 1825, his widow Catawba (Queen) selected Raleigh as the new capital because it would have "an excellent location for trade and commerce." The city began expanding rapidly under Queen Catawba's leadership and by 1830 there were over 100 buildings standing in downtown Raleigh alone! By 1840, more than 2,000 people lived in Raleigh proper! In 1865, Confederate General Moore decided that he would rather surrender than fight against Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant so he withdrew his men from Durham Court House south of town to Fort Bragg near present day Cary Avenue and Lenoir Road. Most Northern soldiers believed that General Moore had abdicated his responsibilities as Commander-in-Chief within Confederate ranks and so refused to fight him instead choosing instead to flee across country into South Carolina! This event known as "The surrender of Ratcliffe" has been cited as one reason why North Carolina became one of Thirteen Southern states that seceded from the United States on December 12th 1861. On July 14th 1870, voting began for Mayoralty candidates including John Fenton who won handily with almost 60% ofthe vote; however no mayor was elected due to lack of nominations! This period saw significant growth both economically and politically because many skilled workers migrated northward looking for better opportunities while also creating large amount spirit industries which continues today into modern times like trucking/logging/textile manufacturing etc
