By 1920, however, economic stagnation had set in once again and Raleigh declined further into obscurity until it reemerged as a sleepy little town again around 30 years later

Raleigh became an important commercial and military center during the American Civil War, and was renamed for George Washington in 1865. The city experienced rapid growth after World War II, thanks to its location near the new Interstate 85 corridor. In 2006, Raleigh was named one of "The Top 10 cities for young adults" by Forbes magazine.
