Pinehurst is a town in Carteret County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,205 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1868, a group of men from Raleigh founded Pinehurst as an agricultural community to provide land for cotton plantations in what was then Southern Georgia. The town was named for General James A. Pine and his family who had donated land for the settlement. The first houses were built in 1869 and by 1870 there were over 50 homes in the townite. By 1876, there were 300 residents and businesses with a Baptist church, post office, schoolhouse and two stores serving the community. By 1880, there were 7 churches and schools in the town including one that served as a model for many later towns throughout North Carolina In 1927 Pinehurst became an incorporated municipality with a mayor-council form of government under which it has continued to operate since then with only minor changes. In 1992 Pinehurst voters passed a referendum authorizing annexation by Durham City which took effect on July 1st that year making Pinehurst part of Durham Pinehurst has experienced some significant changes over time including being annexed by Durham City; however most notable have been its growth rates due to its location within Raleigh/Durham – one of America’s most populous metropolitan areas – as well as its infrastructure investments such as new roads and water systems which have made it easier to get around town than when it first started out
Pinehurst was founded in 1771 by Captain James Cook, who named it after the Pinewoods near his home in London. The plantation was started by John Anderson and continued by his son Nicholas. In 1802, Pinehurst was acquired by the British East India Company. The company gave the land to their employees as part of their severance pay following the American Revolution. After the war, Pinehurst became a slave-based plantation with over 1,000 enslaved people working on its plantations and farms. The last slaves were Freedmen of America from Union lines in 1865.
