Pinehurst, North Carolina is a small town located in Nash County, North Carolina. The population was 5,191 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Nash County. Pinehurst is located on the banks of the Nash River and has a total area of 26 square miles. The village charter was granted on November 6, 1853 to Joseph Mclntyre by then-Governor John Copley. The name Pinehurst comes from White Mountain Lake which locals called "Pinehurt" because it looked like a pine tree when seen from high up in the mountains. The first post office opened in Pinehurst on January 15, 1854. By 1870, there were only 36 residents living in what would become Pinehurst proper. In 1865, local farmers started to grow cotton and found that they needed more water than they could get from White Mountain Lake so they dug a canal through the forest to provide them with water and irrigation for their crops. This canal became known as "The Big Canals." In 1892, George McKinney founded Pinnacle Paper Mills which manufactured paper products such as magazines and Newspapers until he merged with United States Paper Company in 1918. In 1924, Pinnacle Paper Mills became Allied Paper Corporation before being sold to Wabash Paper Corporation in 1969. Allied Paper Corporation was merged into Dow Chemical Company in 1987 and eventually spun off as Unilever plc., one of largest food companies ever formed based on its operations across four continents (the other three being Philips SE & Co., Nestle SA & Co., Arco AG). Pinehurst, North Carolina is a small town located in the southeastern corner of the state of North Carolina. The population was 3,836 at the 2000 census. It is bordered by Moore County to the north, Gaston County to the east, and Bladen County to the south. Pinehurst began as a small Indian trading post on what is now Pigeon Shoals Road. In 1845, it became an incorporated town under the name of Asheboro. On November 4, 1865, Pinehurst was renamed for General Andrew Johnson after he was elected President of the United States. The town had a population of 10 people when it was named for Johnson. Its first store opened in 1868 and its first school opened in 1870. By 1880, Pinehurst had a population of 100 people and its first Baptist church was built that year. In 1886-87, Pinehurst lost its status as an incorporated town when it merged with neighboring Gastonia into one municipality called Gastonia & Pinehurst (later known as Gaston). At that time there were only five Macon businesses within two miles of Pinehurst: four stores and one newsstand open side by side on high ground between Patton Avenue and Tryck Street; Macy’s department store on Patton Avenue; Jepson’s Woolen Mills at Tryck Street; and six-and-a-half miles by public road from downtown Gastonia to Asheboro proper
