Pinehurst was founded in 1736 by Colonel James Edwards. The town was named after the pine tree that grows in the area. The first settler, John Wilkinson, arrived in 1740 and built a cabin on the east side of the river. In 1746, Colonel Edwards organized a militia to protect his settlers from Native Americans. In 1812, Pinehurst became part of Tennessee and was renamed Knoxville. In 1861, Confederate forces burned down the courthouse and burned down much of the town center before withdrawing. Pinehurst regained its former name in 1865 when it became part of North Carolina during the Unionist-Confederate War. The population increased rapidly following Reconstruction and by 1871 had reached 100 residents. However, economic difficulties soon led to bankruptcy and later closure of the town's businesses. Today, little remains of either original Pinehurst or Knoxville apart from some foundations dating back to 1800s
