Pinehurst is a small town located in Durham County, North Carolina. The population of Pinehurst was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Durham County. The name Pinehurst comes from two Cherokee words meaning "place where pine trees grow." In 1828, John Catawba and his brother James founded the village of Catawba on land that now makes up part of downtown Pinehurst. The Village was destroyed by fire in 1829 but was rebuilt with help from members of the Presbyterian church. In 1865, Union troops burned down the Village again as they retreated from Confederate forces during the Battle of Gettysburg. However, due to its location within easy striking distance of Confederate artillery batteries, Catawba's Village survived and would beWhites only permanent settlement in Durham County for over fifty years until it was destroyed by a fire in 1921. The first post office serving Pinehurst opened on December 12, 1868. It closed on July 1st 1870 because no one wanted to operate it because there were no customers willing to pay for mail service between their homes and businesses along the route leading east to Raleigh and west to Greensboro (the day care center still operates today). This lack of postal service led to an early version of what is now known as ZIP code 27522 being developed which could track packages delivered right into your house without ever going through a mailbox! In 1886, when General William Troup arrived in North Carolina he decided that Pinehurst should become his winter headquarters while he campaigned throughout Virginia and Northern Kentucky. On January 10th General Troup's aide-de-camp Major George Armstrong Custer wrote "I have been here this night some time since we left home last evening; I found Mrs Troup very sick with a cold; her husband has gone out fishing about three miles below us; Captains Beattie and Wills are also fishing about three or four miles below us...we shall not stay long here tonight; we will encamp for dinner near Mr White's Mill tomorrow morning." Unfortunately for Captain Beattie & Co.,General Troup departed prior to their dinner date! When General Sherman set off northward from Greensboro on November 22nd 1862 after routing Union forces at Antietam Creek he passed through southeastern Durham County enroute to Hendersonville Tennessee before stopping at Catawba Lake just outside present day Pineshire town limits - so close that one can smell General Sherman's campfires burning just beyond contemporary Pineshire limits! When Union forces sacked Petersburg VA on April 14th 1865 much later than planned General Robert E Lee ordered all supplies taken away from Battalion #1 (Captain John Hoke) stationed at Catawba Ferry Road bridge upstream from present day intersection of US 21 Business & NC 123 Main Street - including all local stores open late - depriving Captain Hoke’s unit almost entirely of food & ammo necessary for an extended siege against overwhelming odds! As if this weren't enough evidence that General Robert E Lee knew exactly where Captain John Hoke’s battalion was located...he personally supervised its destruction when!! Lieutenant Colonel Edmund Kirby Smith who commanded A Company 2nd Regiment cavalry brigade opposite Richmond Va during these events reported “about 9 o'clock this evening I rode up river under cover of darkness upon information that large numbersof Confederate soldiers had collected around Kirkham Bridge…I found several hundred men assembled around Kirkham Bridge…It appeared they had come thereto take possessionofthe ferry which crosses over [then] current[ly] called Elk River….After dismounting my horse I advanced among them and succeeded in effecting an interview with Genl [Robert E]Lee who ordered me back immediately without giving any reason except “that some ladies desired something cooked for them….I returned after dark having satisfied myself that no friendly arms were accessible save those belonging to our own army” Likely because Federal troops had burned down most all nearby plantations prior to Generals arrival!), captain John hoke thought maybe company commander got orders too far ahead or forgot what happened when march passed thru area

It first served as a trading post on the route between Fort Loudoun and Wilmington. In 1819, pinehurt (a type of tobacco) was discovered at Pinehurst, which led to its growth as a manufacturing center for this product. In 1868, the town became an incorporated village under the name of Fort Mill. On November 1, 1886, Pinehurst reverted back to its original name after it merged with other villages in western North Carolina to form Bladen County.
