Pinehurst is a small town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Pinehurst were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1792. They named their new settlement after an estate in Scotland that they had seen while on a missionary trip to that country. In 1827, pine trees were found near what is now the village and the name was changed to Pinehurst because of this. Pinehurst is located near two large military installations: Fort Bragg (near Raleigh) and Camp Lejeune (near Durham). These locations have had negative effects on aspects of local life—namely access to education and health care—but have also allowed for significant growth in the town since they opened uphallowed ground to civilians in 2001 following 9/11 terrorist attacks which inflicted heavy losses on our country’s armed forces stationed there that day.
The town of Pinehurst was founded in 1853 by Colonel James G. Polk, who bought 1,000 acres of land and built a mill on the Chickamauga River. The town grew rapidly, and by 1861 it had a population of 1,500 people. In 1865, Pinehurst became the capital of the Confederate States of America after Richmond was destroyed by Union forces. The city continued to grow throughout the war, and by 1865 it had a population of over 10,000 people. When the war ended, Pinehurst returned to its original size and status as a small rural community. However,oline growth slowed during the postwar period because many settlers abandoned the area for more lucrative opportunities in other parts of North Carolina or Virginia. In 1970, Pinehurst became an incorporated community with its own government and economy.
