At its peak, Pinehurst had over 2,000 residents and it boasted an opera house, a library, two newspapers and three banks—twice as many as any other small town in central North Carolina at that time. The economic decline of the 20th century took a toll on Pinehurst with only 810 residents living in 1950; by 2000 this had decreased to 680 residents (the low point). However due to some innovative community development initiatives such as free health clinics and job training programs following World War II which helped revive local economy around 2000-2001 new homes began popping up all throughout downtown while businesses continued to thrive including several art galleries along with restaurants like Starbucks Coffee (@StarcafePinehurt) and KFC (@KFC_CN) located right next door to one another giving people easy access to everything without leaving their neighborhoods or towns square footage wise alone! Pinehurst, North Carolina is a town in Orange County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 10,564 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Orange County and one of its four towns. Pinehurst was founded by General Richard Stockton and his men on July 16, 1765 as a station on the main road from Wilmington to Chowan River. After becoming part of Catawba County in 1801, Pinehurst became an independent town and remained so until 1920 when it merged with neighboring Counties Tryon and Randolph to form Orangeburg County. In 1930, Pinehurst incorporated as a city and has since grown rapidly into one of the most populous cities in South Carolina. The original courthouse building still stands today adjacent to the civic center which served as both municipal hall and court house from 1870-1920 when Pinehurst became an independent city. On February 11th 1892 for what would become known as "The Fairest Day in Pinehurst", Mayor Aiken dedicated First National Bank Building (now City Hall) located at 400 E Broad Street which had been built originally by Pemberton & Company Restaurant Developers Incorporated vaults that faced Broad Street across from the old Masonic Lodge No 2 (the former Masonic Lodge). At this time Pinehurst boasted over 100 business locations including 25 banks/credit unions plus 30 grocery stores/diner restaurants On July 1st 1907 election day residents of Pinehurst successfully petitioned Durham County Commissioners to be allowed to have their own mayor instead of serving simultaneously throughDurham Mayor William Hargrave who they felt was too close kin to them financially speaking

The area became an important stop on the Underground Railroad, and many enslaved Africans were brought here for refuge. In 1814, Pinehurst was redesignated Fort Monckton and renamed Fort Raleigh after Sir Walter Raleigh, who explored America during the early seventeenth century. In 1865, Pinehurst became the capital of North Carolina.
