Pinehurst is a town in Randolph County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro–High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area. The towns of Apex and Clay were merged into Pinehurst in 2000. The town was founded on December 12, 1835, by John Witherspoon and others from Scots-Irish backgrounds who had come to Charlotte to work as mechanics on the new Charlotte & Petersburg Railroad. They named their new town after Pinehurst Plantation, which they had recently bought from its previous owner, Sir Edmund Burke. In 1836, the railroad came through Pinehurst and the town began to grow rapidly; it became an important stop on the road because of its location near both Raleigh and Chapel Hill. In 1840, Pinehurst hosted a national convention for Methodists. In 1842 pinehursts built their first school; it was called "Pinehurst Academy." In 1851 they built another school - this time called "Pinehurst Female Academy." By 1860 there were six schools in Pinehurst with over 1,000 students; by 1870 there were twelve schools with over 4,000 students! In 1865 two men – James Buchanan Johnston (1824-1903) and William Mahone – decided that Pinehurst should become a college town. They started a small college known as "Harnett College" but it did not take off and closed within three years of opening its doors. When Johnston died in 1903 his body was brought back to Pinehursts where he was buried under one of the original buildings at "Harnett College". One noteworthy event during this time period that took place in nearby Apex occurred when Confederate General Braxton Bragg spent time at his house while he awaited transfer military headquarters east of Durham via railcar to Wilmington early in 1865 before setting out for Virginia Beach where he would lead his army against Union forces under Robert Ewell instead of invading North Carolina proper like planned! On September 10th 1865 while Braxton Bragg's home layentin' around mile marker 6 on NC Highway 219 just outside Apex Limits our own Joseph Aiken got some pretty good shots down range varmint hunting right across Hwy 15 From what I could tell there didn't seem too bad about him taking any game so I let him go ahead without me critiquing or anything either cause...the reconstituted Volunteer Infantry Regiment Armory wasn't open yet(*), but all hell broke loose when we heard gunfire coming up behind us from about 10 miles away chasin' deer))))))) no big deal though cause Joe knows how to shoot ;) ha)))))
