Later patents were filed for devices that allowed the user to pivot the gun about its horizontal axis. These guns could be fired in any direction but up or down. In 1822, John Browning developed a design for what would become the Browning Rifle that allowed users to rotate the barrel around its longitudinal axis while keeping it pointed in one direction. This innovation helped reduce aiming problems common with traditional handguns and shotguns which required precision timing sequences when firing in all directions simultaneously. meanwhile, other inventors were working on similar designs such as George Stephenson’sImprovement No 2 of 1827 which usedinstead of rotational motion for rotating the barrel and also added an adjustable target sight onto either side of the weapon

In 1827, Jameson and his brother-in-law, David Humphreys, purchased a tract of land in what is now Pinehurst from the Catawba tribe. The pair named their new property "Pinehurst" after the pine trees that were their mainstay for fuel during the early 1800s. Little did they know that this plantation would one day become one of the most important homes in North Carolina history. In 1828, Jameson married Martha Morehead and started construction on the first house on Pinehurst. The couple lived in this structure until 1840 when they moved to a more spacious home nearby. There they raised six children with their second wife, Sarah Jane McDowell. In 1849, John Cotesworth Marshall inherited Pinehurst and began expanding it into what is now known as one of the most important plantations in North Carolina history. With over 1 million acres under cultivation in 1861, Marshall was able to provide critical support for Confederate troops during the American Civil War. Many of his slaves also contributed to his success throughout Reconstruction years later. After Robert Easley became president of North Carolina in 1901 and decided to end Reconstruction, many former slaves left Pinehurst for better opportunities outside of South Carolina or Georgia. However, some remaining slaves continue to work on Marshall's plantations until today. Today, Pinehurst remains an important part of North Carolina history as a major slaveholding estate and an iconic cultural landmark synonymous with its founder and patriarch – Jameson Humphreys Sr.– who helped shape America’s first black political leader (Martha Morehead).
