Pinehurst is a small town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Cumberland River and is the county seat of Gaston County. The name Pinehurst may come from a Scots word meaning "place where pine trees grow." Pinehurst grew up around two small sawmills that were used for logging until the early 20th century. In 1892, when a new railroad was built through Gaston County, Pinehurst moved to its current site and began to grow as a commercial center. Many of today's businesses were founded in Pinehurst during this time including Appalachian Paper Company (now Eastern Paper) and State Bank of Gastonia. The post office in Pinehurst was established in 1892 and has been in operation since then. Today, many local businesses offer mail delivery or package service to residents within their boundaries. Some notable items that have been delivered through the postal service include furniture and appliances from Sears Roebuck & Co., food supplies from JBS Meats Inc., medications from AARP member company CVS Pharmacy, and auto parts from Ford Motor Company. Pinehurst is a town in Davidson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 10,902 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1875 and named for Colonel James Pine of the United States Marine Corps. The first settlers were white men from South Carolina who arrived in 1875 on the Palmetto River. A post office was established in Pinehurst on October 15, 1875, and the town proper was laid out on November 3, 1875. On February 11, 1886, pinehurst became a city under the terms of an act approved by the General Assembly of North Carolina. The first mayor of Pinehurst was Wm H. Cockrell and selectmen were Geo Aiken and Fenton Dixon. The first school board was elected on December 4th with John Latham as chairperson and Ebenezer Dickson as vice-chairperson; it had five members: three men and two women. Construction of a jail began on May 25th, 1889 which served as the town's first civic building until 1895 when a new jail was built across US 71 near present day Baptist Church Road. In 1901 incorporation passed to the newly formed municipality ofmington after vote by residents over whether or not to become part of Raleigh or Chapel Hill due to increasing competition for jobs within those cities following World War I (the Great Depression). The economic decline that hit Pinehurst during this time led to many businesses closing their doors including most notably Jugular Press which manufactured beer cans out of recycled glass bottles until 1978 when they closed their doors permanently due to lack of business opportunities during what has been called "the dark age" for American manufacturing towns/cities
