Pinehurst is a small town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chapel Hill-Cary metropolitan area. The town was founded by Scots settlers in 1795 and named for Pinehurst Mountain, a mountain peak in Scotland. The first post office opened in 1802. In 1847, the town acquired a land grant from Governor Tryon and built a gristmill on the east side of High Street. In 1865, Pinehurst annexed what is now Cary Township. In 1892, Pinehurst became an incorporated municipality with one resident per square mile and voted to annex more townships including Catawba and New Hanover counties. By 1920, the population had grown to 2,500 residents and it annexed Morehead City that same year. From 1940 until 1959, Pinehurst was led by Jock Mahoney who served as its mayor from 1948 to 1960; he also served as its school superintendent from 1941 to 1949 and 1951 to 1957; during his tenure as mayor he spearheaded efforts to renovate or rebuild many of the town's buildings which were abandoned due to lack of use or rustling during World War II shortages of lumber at home because of the war effort; some examples include plans for a library (which never came through), improvements to High Street between Town Hall Square and First Baptist Church (renamed "Mahoney Square" after him) which included resurfacing streets damaged during World War II bombardments such as King Road between Asheville Avenue & West Main Street), construction of new fireplaces in each public building (including Town Hall Square), installation of electricity throughout most municipal offices (it originally consisted onlyof kerosene lamps), development of internet access within municipal government through fiber optics lines extending into other municipalities throughout North Carolina thereby making government functions much more accessible than they are today - all while maintaining high standards for customer service which has made Pinehurst one of the most popular places in Durham County for tourists! This success story can be credited largely with Mahoney's hard work ethic coupled with his passion for public service which has been apparent throughout his career even when times have been tough - starting with being elected Mayor without running against him on election day despite having no prior political experience! When Mahoney resigned due to health issues later that year he was succeeded by his DeputyMayor Pheobe Wynn who also held that position until 1984 when she left abruptly after serving two terms unexceptional due primarily to her husband's successful run for Congress! After leaving office she helped found The women’s Resource Center located downtown where she currently resides continues operations providing leadership opportunities/funding opportunities statewide affecting over 350 organizations!! With more than $1 billion invested statewide in real estate projects since 2007 alone,[2] much attention is focused on Pinehurst's future when considering all aspects such as its unique location within some of North Carolina's most vibrant communities while also accommodating growth into adjacent neighborhoods currently without similar development opportunities or infrastructure support given their smaller populations or lack thereof outside investment dollars available to address their needs. Some concerns raised about this rapidly evolving landscape include potential traffic congestion created by increased employment density among both higher education institutions[3][4][5] and larger commercial corridors; access difficulties for those living near these areas due to limited transportation options including inadequate sidewalks or bike lanes connecting residents' homes directly to local Roads; long wait times for services like water fluoridation which are essential for public health[6]; possible displacement or abandonment by current residents who may find themselves unable to commute or afford new housing closer to job centers because they can no longer sell their homes at a profit anymore due to increasing property values[7]; however, overall analysts have found that while some challenges remain,[8] pinehurtstown will continueto grow economically even amidst encroaching development in nearby townships
