Pinehurst is a small town in north-central North Carolina. The population was 8,986 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg–Anderson, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1827 by General James Johnston as a military post on the banks of the James River. Johnston's brother, Sir John Johnston (1763-1835), served as governor of North Carolina from 1825 to 1830 and also founded Raleigh, North Carolina in 1819. In 1827 Pinehurst became one of twelve original towns organized within Anderson County when it was created from eastern Carteret County. At that time only men could own land and there were no schools or other public amenities until after Reconstruction when they were built through private donations and foundation grants by leaders like Andrew Johnson and his Vice President, Wade Hampton Jr.. Pinehurst experienced significant economic development during both World War I (1914-18) and World War II (1939-1945). The Charleston Naval Shipyard built USS "Pinecastle" here between 1944 and 1945; white pine lumber became an important export commodity during those times. Since then pine lumber has been slowly replaced by other materials such as metalworking products, furniture manufacturing, vehicle production and agricultural purposes. Today Pinehurst is home to many businesses including four KFC restaurants along with several churches; it also has a small shopping center with a variety of stores for local farmers markets as well as general retail items. Some residents work in nearby larger towns while others have chosen to remain self-sufficient due to its remote location and lack of transportation options outside of Greenville or Spartanburg counties which are much more populous than Pinehurst.
