The community was founded in 1827 and named for Dr. John Nance Pine in honor of his donation of land to the town. Pinehurst has a crossroads location on U.S. 301 between Durham and Chapel Hill which led to its nickname "The Cross Roads." The town has several businesses that include three news stations: WECT-TV (NBC), WCNC (FOX) and Time Warner Cable TV station WCNC-TV (CW). In addition, there are several restaurants including White Castle, Hardee's and Chick-fil-A. There are also two golf courses in the community - one inside the High school and one outside on winding roads near Interstate 85/Upton Road. According to the 2010 census, Pinehurst had a total population of 1,004 people living within its limits as well as 281 households out of which 98% were occupied by individuals over age 65 years old or older who were original residents of Henderson County when they first moved into their homes hereabouts during or after World War II; many others have since settled down hereabouts since then – some for only brief periods while others have come permanently; all these good citizens contribute materially towards making this vital small hamlet an attractive place where people can live year round without detriment from weather conditions other than occasional blustery outbreaks from time to time; sunshine herein suffices for days on end with no need for artificial light sources whatsoever whatever what so ever! Pinehurst is a town located in western North Carolina, about 15 miles (24 km) northwest of Charlotte. The population was 5,874 at the 2010 census. Pinehurst is home to the Pinehurst Golf Club and the Pinehurst Tennis Club, both of which are part of the PGA TOUR. The first permanent settler in what is now Pinehurst was James Robertson in 1837. Robertson's land lay near present-day day Gastonia, N.C., on Yadkin River. He named his new community "Pinehurst" after pine trees he saw growing near his plantation house. The first post office was established in 1841 and served as both a center for trade with neighboring townships and as an important stop on stagecoach routes linking Charlotte and Lexington, Ky., where textile mills were also being built at that time. In 1849, John Ashe litigation began over records regarding ownership of Robert Easley's Tryon Plantation west of Chapel Hill; Ashe won but lost several key witnesses including General Bragg who testified against him in court In 1860, Confederate Gen. Joseph Johnston arrived in Raleigh before taking up arms against Ulysses S Grant during the American Civil War and moved to nearby Sumterville where he met Johnston's father-in-law Drayton McLaws; Johnston bought McLaws' share of Tryon Plantation In 1861/62, Pender County formed from Moore County following Secessionist efforts by many southern countiesincluding Pender—and Pinehurst became its nominees capital . On July 10th 1861 there was an attack by Union troops on two Confederate soldiers escorting Mrs. Lincoln from West Point to Beaufort; one soldier died immediately while another managed to get away unharmed AfterUnion forces burned down some homes near present day Gastonia on October 15th 1861 local residents started rebuilding using logs taken from burning homes but soon realized they needed more lumber so they set up a storeroom behind their house which became known as "The Log House." That year too Pinehurst becoming eligible for military service under Emancipation Proclamation ; rifle companies were raised there but never put into combat The last post office closed on November 30th 1865 after serving 413 days . Today only memory remains of it being open – boxes left inside when it burned down three years earlier
